About the Role

You will own the People function at ZGM end to end. Partnering closely with our Director of People & Culture, you'll run full-cycle recruiting, onboarding and offboarding, benefits and 401(k) administration, HRIS and records, and multi-state compliance for a distributed team of employees and contractors. This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role on a lean team, which means real ownership and influence from day one, and no task that is beneath anyone, from shaping a benefits decision to shipping a swag order.

If you want to build and improve the function rather than just maintain it, this is the role for you!

Success in the first year looks like reliable, compliant People operations that run smoothly, a positive candidate and employee experience, and processes that are measurably better than you found them.

What You’ll Do

  • Own full-cycle recruiting for employees and contractors, from job posting and sourcing through screening, interviews, and offer stage, partnering with the Director for approval at key milestones and keeping every candidate's experience responsive and positive.
  • Run onboarding and offboarding end to end for employees and contractors, including access provisioning, documentation, and a smooth, compliant, welcoming experience.
  • Administer health benefits and the 401(k) in partnership with the Director, support open enrollment, and serve as the trusted first point of contact for employee benefits questions.
  • Own employee and contractor data in the HRIS, keeping it accurate and reliable across updates, audits, and reporting, and improve the underlying data processes over time.
  • Support multi-state compliance by maintaining accurate records, handling I-9 verification and audits, keeping policies aligned with federal and state requirements, and flagging risks to the Director early.
  • Draft and send clear, professional company-wide communications about People Ops programs and updates, partnering with leadership on messaging as needed.
  • Keep the operational details running, including company swag ordering and distribution, plus travel and company-event coordination as needed.

What You Bring

  • The ability to operate independently. You take ambiguous problems and run with them, and you know when to check in.
  • A roll-up-your-sleeves mindset where no task is beneath you and the unglamorous work still gets done well.
  • Resourcefulness with a lean team and budget. You get a lot done without an established playbook.
  • 3–6 years in a People Operations or HR Generalist role, with a track record of owning core People processes on your own and improving the workflows around them.
  • Hands-on experience running a full-cycle recruiting process.
  • Strong accuracy and follow-through with sensitive data, plus sound judgment and discretion with confidential employee matters.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in multi-state employment environments and familiarity with state-specific compliance (leave laws, wage-and-hour basics).
  • Experience in a remote and/or agency setting.
  • Familiarity with HRIS and project-management tools such as Gusto, Asana, or similar.
  • Ideally located in the Eastern time zone or willing to work those hours

Who Thrives Here

You show up real, do the hard work with your team, and take ownership of your part without waiting to be asked. You are curious enough to challenge the default, honest enough to name what is not working, and grounded enough to work through the tough moments without losing sight of the bigger picture. You care about progress over perfection and bring both creative energy and strategic thinking to everything you do. If you are energized by results, invested in the work, and want to be part of something that is genuinely building toward something bigger, you will find your people here.
