About XyloPlan

XyloPlan is a seed-stage physics-based wildfire risk modeling company. Our simulation engine models fire progression through four distinct stages: pre-conditions, wildfire, transition, and urban conflagration. That simulation produces parcel-level risk scoring, portfolio accumulation analytics, and quantified mitigation modeling at a resolution and explainability that statistical risk scores structurally cannot match.

We work directly with fire agencies, land owners, and municipalities to develop mitigation plans that reduce wildfire risk at the parcel and community level. A key differentiator is our ability to actively collect this mitigation data and process it into our community-based risk models, creating a feedback loop between on-the-ground risk reduction and the analytics that insurers, utilities, and reinsurers consume. That closed loop, from mitigation planning to quantified risk improvement, is something no other platform in the market delivers.

We were co-founded in 2023 by CEO Scott Cheeseman, Head of R&D Scott Farley, and Chief Fire Risk Officer Dave Winnacker, a retired fire chief with deep operational credibility in the wildland and WUI fire community.

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated intern to join our Professional Services team for the summer, with the possibility of extending through the rest of the year and converting to a full-time role for the right candidate. You will work directly with our Professional Services Project Manager, supporting the day-to-day GIS and data preparation work that powers XyloPlan’s mitigation planning projects.

This is a hands-on role for someone who pays close attention to data quality and wants to see the direct impact of their work on real-world fire mitigation projects. The role is perfect for someone who is already comfortable in a GIS environment, but open to those who are willing to learn.

What You’ll Do

• Digitize modeling features within the XyloPlan interface, ensuring spatial accuracy and consistency with project requirements.
• Write clear, accurate layer descriptions to support project documentation and client deliverables.
• Prepare and quality-check GIS datasets for use in XyloPlan workflows, including coordinate system management, attribute cleanup, and format conversion.
• Generate data outputs as part of our fire behavior analysis workflows.
• Perform basic configuration of JSON files to support project visualizations.

What We’re Looking For

Required

• Basic to intermediate proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent) or willingness to learn.
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to spatial data work.
• Clear written communication skills for layer documentation and internal notes.
• Enrollment in or recent completion of a STEM degree program.

Nice to Have

• Formal coursework or certification in GIS (e.g., a GIS-focused geography or environmental science program).
• Experience using GitHub for version control and file management.
• Ability to read and make basic edits to JSON files.
• Familiarity with AI tools, automation, or experience implementing AI agents.
• Background or coursework in forestry, wildland fire, environmental science, or land management.
