KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Vehicle Operation
- Operate waste collection equipment, including rear-load, front-load, side-load, and roll-off trucks, safely and efficiently.
- Drive collection vehicles along designated routes, adhering to traffic laws and company policies.
- Maneuver vehicles in tight or restricted spaces and navigate urban, residential, and industrial areas.
Waste Collection and Handling
- Load and unload waste and recyclables according to schedules and safety procedures.
- Ensure that waste collection bins and containers are properly secured to prevent spills or hazards.
- Operate hydraulic and mechanical equipment to lift and empty waste containers into the vehicle.
Vehicle Maintenance and Inspections
- Conduct pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with regulations.
- Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs, such as checking oil, tires, brakes, and other vehicle systems.
- Report any vehicle malfunctions, mechanical issues, or safety concerns to the supervisor or maintenance team.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety protocols and regulations to minimize risk of accidents or injuries.
- Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Ensure that collection practices comply with local, state, and federal environmental and waste management regulations.
Customer Service
- Provide professional and courteous service to residents, business owners, and the public during collection operations.
- Address and report customer inquiries, complaints, or issues to the appropriate team or supervisor.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of daily collection activities, vehicle inspections, and any incidents.
- Report any accidents, vehicle issues, or safety violations in a timely manner.
- Complete required paperwork, including collection logs and vehicle reports.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with other operators and waste management personnel to ensure efficient and safe collection operations.
- Assist in training new drivers or operators as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Previous experience operating heavy vehicles or waste collection equipment is preferred.
Licensing:
- Valid **Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)** with the appropriate class for the equipment being operated.
- Additional certifications in safety or waste management (e.g., Hazardous Materials Certification) may be required depending on the job scope.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of vehicle operation, mechanics, and maintenance.
- Ability to drive safely and adhere to traffic laws and company policies.
- Good communication skills for interacting with the public and team members.
- Basic problem-solving skills to handle equipment issues or operational challenges.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
- Capacity to lift and carry heavy loads (up to 50 pounds) as part of waste handling.
- Ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance and inspections.
- Endurance to work outdoors and manage tasks in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
Working Conditions:
- The job is performed both in the driver’s cab and outside, in various weather conditions and environments.
- Work may require early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays as part of the collection schedule.
- Potential exposure to hazardous waste materials and the need for adherence to safety procedures.
