KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Waste Collection
- Collect waste and recyclable materials from residential, commercial, and industrial sites according to a scheduled route.
- Operate waste collection vehicles, including garbage trucks and recycling trucks, ensuring safe handling and operation.
- Empty waste bins and containers into collection vehicles and ensure that all materials are properly secured for transport.
Vehicle Operation and Maintenance
- Safely drive and maneuver collection vehicles on assigned routes, following traffic laws and company safety protocols.
- Conduct routine inspections and perform basic maintenance on the collection vehicle to ensure it is in good working condition.
- Report any vehicle malfunctions, damage, or needed repairs to the supervisor.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all personnel and the public.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, reflective vests, and safety boots.
- Ensure waste collection activities comply with environmental regulations and local laws regarding waste management and disposal.
Customer Service
- Provide courteous service to residents, business owners, and the public while on collection routes.
- Address questions or concerns from customers and provide assistance or report issues to the appropriate team or supervisor.
Waste Sorting and Recycling
- Assist in sorting recyclable materials as needed to ensure proper recycling practices.
- Monitor and separate items for recycling to promote sustainable waste disposal and minimize landfill use.
Record-Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate logs of the collection route, vehicle inspection, and any issues encountered during the shift.
- Report collection statistics and any incidents to management at the end of the shift.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Work closely with other waste collection workers to efficiently complete assigned routes.
- Assist colleagues as needed and help ensure that tasks are completed safely and on schedule.
Emergency Response
- Be prepared to respond to emergency situations involving waste collection or related hazards.
- Follow emergency procedures and report incidents promptly to management.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Experience:
Previous experience in waste collection, waste management, or a related field is advantageous but not always required.
Skills:
- Ability to operate large collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Strong physical stamina to lift, carry, and move heavy waste containers.
- Good communication skills for interacting with the public and team members.
- Basic problem-solving skills to handle equipment issues or obstacles on the job.
Licensing:
- A valid driver’s license (Class B or higher may be required depending on the type of vehicle operated).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work long shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 pounds) frequently.
- Ability to endure exposure to various weather conditions, such as heat, cold, and rain.
- Comfortable working in outdoor environments and near active traffic or industrial areas.
Working Conditions:
- The role is typically performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to noise, dust, and odors.
- Workers may be required to work in early morning or late evening shifts and on holidays or weekends, depending on collection schedules.
