KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Traffic Data Collection and Analysis
- Operate and maintain equipment for collecting traffic data, including traffic counters, video cameras, and radar devices.
- Compile and organize traffic flow data, vehicle counts, speed studies, and accident reports for analysis.
- Assist in the preparation of traffic reports, graphs, and charts to support engineering analyses.
Field Inspections and Evaluations
- Conduct on-site inspections of roadways, intersections, and traffic control devices to assess current conditions and safety concerns.
- Assist in the evaluation and documentation of infrastructure, including signs, signals, and road markings.
- Identify potential traffic safety hazards and recommend corrective actions to the traffic engineering team.
Design Support
- Assist in drafting and preparing drawings and layouts for traffic control plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Support the creation and implementation of traffic control devices, including signage and signal placement.
- Help with the development of project plans and specifications for new traffic projects or improvements.
Traffic Signal and Device Maintenance
Perform routine maintenance and inspections of traffic signals, streetlights, and other traffic control devices to ensure proper functioning.
Coordinate with maintenance teams to report any malfunctions or damage to traffic control equipment.
Support the installation and programming of traffic signal systems, as required.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with traffic engineers, urban planners, and public works departments to share data and insights.
- Assist in communicating traffic changes to the public and preparing materials for presentations and public meetings.
- Coordinate with external contractors or agencies to support traffic engineering projects.
Research and Documentation
- Conduct research on traffic control practices, safety measures, and innovative technologies in the field of traffic engineering.
- Maintain accurate records of traffic studies, data collection, and project documentation.
- Prepare reports summarizing field findings and analysis for review by traffic engineers and project managers.

REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Transportation Engineering, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree is a plus.
Experience:
1-3 years of experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning, or a related technical field.
Skills:
- Proficiency in using CAD software and other design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation).
- Strong analytical skills for data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Technical Knowledge:
Familiarity with traffic data collection and analysis equipment.
Understanding of traffic signal systems, road signs, and roadway markings.
Basic knowledge of traffic engineering principles and roadway design.
Certifications:
- Certification as a Traffic Control Technician (e.g., IMSA Traffic Signal Technician) is advantageous.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are typically required for site visits and fieldwork.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to conduct fieldwork, including walking long distances, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in different weather conditions and environments, including outdoors and urban settings.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed for traffic data collection.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments.
- Fieldwork may involve exposure to traffic and construction zones, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Standard work hours may include some overtime and occasional travel to various sites for data collection and project meetings.
