JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a skilled Traffic Engineer to join our team at WSA. The Traffic Engineer will be responsible for conducting traffic analysis and assessments, designing traffic systems, managing projects, ensuring safety and compliance, collaborating with stakeholders, and implementing traffic control and operations. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, 2-5 years of experience in traffic engineering, and proficiency in traffic engineering software. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Traffic Analysis and Assessment
- Conduct traffic studies and surveys to collect data on traffic volume, flow, and safety.
- Analyze traffic patterns, accident reports, and transportation data to identify areas of concern and potential improvements.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of current traffic control devices and systems.
Design and Planning
- Develop plans and designs for traffic systems, including roadways, intersections, signage, and signal systems to improve safety and traffic flow.
- Use engineering software and simulation tools to model and predict traffic impacts of proposed changes or new projects.
- Collaborate with urban planners and engineers to ensure designs align with broader infrastructure plans.
Project Management
- Oversee traffic engineering projects from initiation to completion, managing timelines, resources, and budgets.
- Coordinate with contractors and other professionals during construction phases to ensure that designs are implemented as planned.
- Monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and make adjustments to project scope or implementation as needed.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure that traffic systems adhere to local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
- Implement safety measures to reduce accidents and improve traffic safety for all road users.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify safety hazards and ensure compliance.
Collaboration and Coordination
- Work closely with government agencies, transportation departments, city planners, and law enforcement to discuss and coordinate traffic solutions.
- Engage with community stakeholders and the public to gather feedback and address concerns related to traffic projects.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to decision-makers regarding transportation infrastructure and policy.
Traffic Control and Operations
- Develop and manage traffic control plans for construction projects and special events.
- Evaluate and recommend the installation or modification of traffic signals, signs, and other control devices.
- Implement and maintain Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to monitor and manage traffic in real-time.
Research and Reporting
- Conduct research on emerging traffic technologies and best practices to inform engineering decisions.
- Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and documentation for stakeholders, including data analysis and project recommendations.
- Submit periodic progress reports and updates to project managers and higher management.
Public Communication and Education
- Educate the public about new traffic changes, projects, and initiatives through meetings, reports, or informational materials.
- Address public inquiries and concerns related to traffic systems and infrastructure projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
Experience:
2-5 years of relevant experience in traffic engineering. Experience with traffic modeling and analysis tools is preferred.
Licensing:
Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
Skills:
Proficiency in traffic engineering software.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Project management capabilities.
Certifications:
Certification in Traffic Engineering is a plus.
Familiarity with transportation safety standards and practices.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to conduct field inspections and site evaluations.
Capacity to travel to project sites and meet with stakeholders as required.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment with the possibility of field visits.
May require working outside regular business hours.
