KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Supervision of Inmates

Supervise and direct the work of inmate labor crews assigned to various tasks.

Assign tasks based on inmate skills and qualifications to maximize productivity.

Monitor inmate behavior and ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations during work.


Task Management

  • Oversee daily operations and work activities, which may include construction, maintenance, landscaping, janitorial work, or other labor-intensive tasks.
  • Ensure that work is completed according to the facility’s standards, timelines, and quality expectations.
  • Track progress and make adjustments as needed to meet project deadlines and objectives. 


Safety and Security

  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure all work is carried out in compliance with safety standards to minimize the risk of injury.
  • Maintain awareness of inmate movements and behaviors to prevent unauthorized activity or potential safety breaches.
  • Respond to incidents or emergencies, coordinating with correctional officers and facility management as needed.
  • Training and Development
  • Train inmates on proper use of tools, equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to inmates to enhance their skills and ensure tasks are performed correctly.
  • Conduct periodic assessments of inmates’ work performance and provide feedback.


Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain detailed records of work assignments, inmate productivity, and incident reports.
  • Report any disciplinary issues, safety concerns, or incidents to facility administrators or security staff.
  • Document completed work and ensure proper paperwork is filed according to facility policies.


Equipment and Materials Management

  • Ensure that all tools, machinery, and work supplies are properly maintained, stored, and secured.
  • Coordinate with supply staff to ensure that required materials and tools are available for work projects.
  • Inspect equipment regularly to ensure it is in safe working condition and report any issues for repair.


Collaboration with Other Departments

  • Work closely with correctional officers, security staff, and other facility personnel to coordinate work assignments and maintain security.
  • Collaborate with facility management to plan and prioritize work projects and allocate resources effectively.


REQUIREMENTS


Education:

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in construction, maintenance, or a related field is advantageous.

 

Experience:

Previous experience in a supervisory role, particularly in a construction, maintenance, or correctional setting, is preferred.

 

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to manage inmate crews effectively.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and workplace safety regulations.
  • Ability to train and instruct others and enforce work standards.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.


Certifications:

  • Certification in first aid and CPR may be required.
  • Specialized training in areas such as construction safety, equipment operation, or security management is a plus.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical work as needed.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move heavy items as part of supervision or training.
  • Stamina and strength to oversee physically demanding work environments.


Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a correctional facility setting, which may involve exposure to confined or potentially hazardous environments.
  • The position may require working in varying weather conditions for outdoor work projects.
  • May require working odd hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays, as dictated by facility scheduling.
  • Interaction with inmates and potentially difficult or confrontational situations.
