KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform comprehensive repairs and maintenance on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and HVAC systems.
- Overhaul and rebuild major vehicle components as needed.
- Use specialized diagnostic tools and equipment to accurately identify and resolve issues.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electrical problems with minimal supervision.
- Interpret diagnostic codes, analyze data, and identify problems using computer-based systems.
- Implement repair solutions and conduct thorough tests to confirm vehicle safety and reliability.
Preventive Maintenance
- Schedule and perform preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, fluid replacements, tire inspections, and general upkeep to ensure the longevity of vehicles.
- Develop and follow maintenance checklists and standard operating procedures.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations and industry standards.
- Perform safety inspections and verify that vehicles are roadworthy and meet all legal requirements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and records for compliance and reporting purposes.
Mentorship and Training
- Train and guide junior technicians (e.g., Fleet Maintenance Technician 1) to improve their skills and understanding of maintenance and repair processes.
- Assist in the onboarding of new employees and provide support with troubleshooting techniques and best practices.
Equipment and Tool Management
- Maintain, calibrate, and organize tools and diagnostic equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Recommend new tools and equipment purchases to enhance repair capabilities.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with fleet managers, supervisors, and drivers to communicate repair needs and vehicle status updates.
- Provide guidance and support to the team and share knowledge on best practices and emerging repair technologies.
- Coordinate with other departments to schedule maintenance activities with minimal disruption to operations.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or certification in automotive or diesel technology is preferred.
Experience:
Typically 3-5 years of experience as a Fleet Maintenance Technician I or equivalent experience in vehicle maintenance and repair
Certification:
- Advanced mechanical and technical knowledge of vehicle systems, components, and maintenance procedures.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and power equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and other departments.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy items (up to 75 pounds) and perform physical tasks, including bending, standing, kneeling, and reaching.
- Comfort working in potentially noisy and hazardous environments with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work flexible hours and be available for emergency repair situations.
Working Conditions
- The role involves working in a repair shop with exposure to loud noises, strong odors, and varying temperatures.
- Technicians may also be required to work outdoors to inspect or test vehicles.
- The job can include irregular hours, overtime, or on-call responsibilities for urgent repair needs.
