Key Responsibilities:

Vehicle Operation

• Operates buses in a safe and efficient manner, following all traffic laws, road safety regulations, and company policies.
• Monitors vehicle performance and reports any mechanical issues or maintenance needs.
• Ensures the bus is clean and in good working condition before and after each shift.

Passenger Safety and Service

• Assists passengers as needed, including helping with boarding, securing mobility devices, and providing information about routes and stops.
• Enforces safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe environment for all passengers.
• Responds to passenger inquiries in a professional and courteous manner, addressing any concerns or complaints.

Route Management

• Follows predetermined routes and schedules, ensuring timely arrivals and departures at designated stops.
• Adjusts driving techniques in response to weather, traffic conditions, and special circumstances to maintain safety and service standards.
• Maintains awareness of route deviations, detours, and alternate paths when necessary.

Record-Keeping and Reporting

• Completes necessary paperwork, including trip reports, incident reports, and vehicle inspection logs.
• Monitors fare collection and ensures passengers are paying appropriate fares, managing passes and fare cards as needed.
• Reports any safety concerns, accidents, or incidents that occur during the course of operations.

Safety Compliance

• Adheres to all safety protocols and regulations set by local, state, and federal transportation agencies.
• Participates in regular training programs, safety drills, and continuing education courses.
• Ensures proper use of safety equipment, including seat belts, emergency exits, and fire extinguishers.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.

Licensing:

Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with a passenger endorsement is mandatory. May require additional certifications or endorsements specific to local regulations.

Experience:

Previous experience as a bus operator or commercial driver is preferred but not always required.

Skills:

• Excellent driving and navigation skills.
• Strong customer service and communication abilities.
• Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
• Good problem-solving and time-management skills.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and safety inspections.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit for long periods and remain alert during the entire shift.
• Ability to assist passengers with boarding and exiting the bus as needed.

Working Conditions:

• The position often involves working in various weather conditions and may include irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
• Operators may work split shifts or extended hours, depending on the bus service schedule.
• The job may include standing, bending, and reaching to handle fares, equipment, or assist passengers.
• Operators must comply with workplace safety and hygiene standards, especially when handling passengers during peak times.
