Retail Store Operations Manager

About Whalebone Apparel

Whalebone is a coastal lifestyle apparel brand born on the beaches of Montauk in 2010, now with flagship stores in Montauk and Newport and a growing e-commerce business serving customers from Maine to Malibu. We're a small, scrappy team mid-growth — actively fundraising, expanding our product drops, and building toward a much bigger version of this brand over the next few years. We need a finance partner who can bring order and foresight to a business that moves fast and seasonally.

Description

Role Overview

As the Newport Retail Operations Manager, you will lead the day-to-day operations of our Whalebone store on Bowen’s Wharf and help keep the shop running smoothly, organized, and welcoming for everyone who walks through the door.

This role is all about keeping the engine running — managing the retail team, building schedules, staying on top of inventory, and making sure the store is well-stocked, well-run, and delivering a great experience for customers.

You’ll also be one of the main faces of Whalebone in Newport, helping create the easygoing, friendly atmosphere that our stores are known for.

Retail Operations

You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Newport store and making sure the shop always looks and feels like Whalebone. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the daily rhythm of the store — schedules, opening/closing, and general operations
  • Hiring, onboarding, and supporting the retail team (typically 3–5 people)
  • Creating a warm, welcoming retail experience for everyone who comes through the door
  • Handling customer needs including purchases, returns, and exchanges
  • Keeping the store clean, organized, and visually on brand
  • Staying on top of the small but important details — from inventory levels to everyday store supplies

Inventory & Logistics

Because Whalebone operates across multiple locations, strong inventory communication is an important part of this role. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining accurate inventory levels in the Newport store
  • Communicating regularly with our Montauk store and Fall River shipping facility
  • Coordinating weekly inventory transfers (typically Mondays) between Montauk and Newport
  • Tracking product sell-through and identifying items that need restocking
  • Keeping inventory records organized and communicating product needs to HQ

Access to a car is required for this role in order to facilitate weekly inventory transport.

Store Environment & Brand Representation

As the day-to-day leader of the shop, you’ll help make sure the store always reflects the Whalebone brand and aesthetic. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a visually appealing and well-organized store environment
  • Collaborating with the Community & Creative Manager on merchandising and displays
  • Helping create a store atmosphere that feels welcoming, relaxed, and on brand
  • Acting as a friendly and authentic representative of Whalebone within the Newport community

Team Leadership & Sales

As the one of the store leads, you’ll help guide the team and keep the shop running successfully throughout the season. Responsibilities include:

  • Working toward monthly and seasonal sales goals
  • Helping the team stay motivated and confident on the sales floor
  • Leading by example with a positive, proactive mindset
  • Supporting the retail team and maintaining strong communication

Schedule & Availability

This role requires flexibility and a strong presence during Whalebone’s busiest months. Expected schedule:

  • Approximately 40 hours per week
  • Weekend work is required
  • Coverage during major summer holidays is required, including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day

Seasonal expectations:

  • Blackout travel period: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend
  • Peak season: May through October
  • Off-season: January through March operates on a lighter and more flexible schedule.
