Description

Position Overview

The Paralegal provides legal support to attorneys in a fast-paced civil litigation environment, with particular focus on employment law matters. This role combines fact gathering, legal research, discovery management, case management, and trial preparation. This is position requires at least 2 years of civil litigation experience in California.


This position requires working under the supervision of a California-licensed attorney in accordance with California Business and Professions Code Section 6450 et seq. The paralegal may not provide legal advice, represent clients in court, set legal fees, or accept cases.


Primary Responsibilities

Fact Gathering & Investigation

  • Conduct interviews and gather information and documents from clients, witnesses, and other parties in employment and civil litigation matters
  • Review and analyze employment records, policies, and documentation for case-relevant information
  • Prepare detailed investigative summaries and fact chronologies
  • Identify key facts and potential evidence in employment disputes and other civil matters

Discovery Management

  • Draft and support attorneys with discovery including document requests, interrogatories, requests for admission, and form interrogatories under California Code of Civil Procedure
  • Organize and review discovery materials with
  • Bates stamping and privilege logging
  • Maintain discovery tracking systems and response deadlines
  • Coordinate with clients for document collection and review
  • Prepare meet and confer correspondence regarding discovery disputes

Legal Calendaring & Case Management

  • With support from the administrative team, manage litigation calendars including court deadlines, discovery cutoffs, and hearing dates for matters and arbitration proceedings
  • Track critical dates from court orders, case management orders, and scheduling orders
  • Update case management systems with deadlines and case developments
  • Coordinate deposition scheduling and logistics
  • Assist with mediation scheduling and logistics
  • Monitor compliance with California Civil Procedure deadlines and Los Angeles Superior Court local rules

 

Document Preparation & Support

  • Support attorneys with legal research on employment law and civil litigation issues and draft legal documents
  • Prepare court filings in compliance with California Rules of Court and Los Angeles Superior Court local rules
  • E-file documents through the California Courts E-Filing Portal
  • Prepare correspondence and discovery-related documents
  • Maintain organized case files (physical and electronic) and handle client communications
  • Assist with preparation for depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials
  • Draft trial preparation documents including witness lists, exhibit lists, and trial binders


Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of civil litigation paralegal experience in California
  • Demonstrated knowledge of California Code of Civil Procedure and Rules of Court
  • Experience with Los Angeles Superior Court procedures and local rules
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to conduct comprehensive legal research
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with clients with empathy and professionalism
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines effectively
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience with legal software including case management systems, e-filing platforms, and discovery tools (MyCase, Dropbox, OneLegal, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program or completion of paralegal studies at an accredited institution preferred; equivalent experience may be substituted for formal education for highly qualified candidates
  • Employment law experience
  • Spanish language proficiency (bilingual strongly preferred)
  • Experience with California labor and employment statutes (FEHA, Labor Code, wage and hour laws)
  • Familiarity with federal employment laws (Title VII, ADA, FMLA)
  • Experience with e-discovery platforms

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation

$31 - $36 per hour (full-time position) commensurate with experience
