VOX ATL welcomes applicants to apply to serve as a fall semester near-peer intern to support after-school programming at VOX ATL. The Atlanta Teen Voices Journalism Fellowship is an opportunity to take a deep dive into the world of journalism through hands-on media creation, guest speakers, and shared learning experiences. Interns will have the opportunity to co-facilitate fellowship workshops, support program evaluation, create a welcoming VOXy environment, connect with and engage fellows, and continue to develop their professional leadership skills. This role is ideal for someone looking to continue building their journalism skills while providing mentorship and support to others in the same pursuit. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working collaboratively in an intergenerational environment and appreciate being part of a project from start to finish.

VOX ATL is media and holistic youth development organization serving Metro Atlanta teens ages 13-19. VOX ATL's mission is to prepare teens for life, career, and community by harnessing the power of youth voice and uncensored self-expression.

Description

Responsibilities:

  • Help develop agendas and facilitate journalism workshops for a cohort of ~15 fellows.
  • Create and maintain a VOXy safe and welcoming environment that upholds VOX ATL values and helps participants to feel free to use their voice.
  • Support the development and follow-through of program evaluations, ensuring that the fellowship meets its goals, and help support VOX programming. 
  • Support the production of the VOX print edition(s).
  • Continually develop your content creation skills across various media.
  • Publish one to two original projects and/or collaborate on our ongoing podcast with WABE, “Chat, Can You Hear Us?” 
  • Collaborate with other VOX ATL Interns to plan and carry out the end-of-semester showcase.
  • Participate in VOX ATL’s hiring committee for open adult staff positions. 
  • Publish content for voxatl.org, or social media channels (YouTube, Instagram, etc.) 


Schedule & Compensation:

  • This is a semester-long internship (August-December) and will end on the final day of programming. This position averages 10 hours per week.
  • The Journalism Fellowship Intern must be able to attend weekly intern meetings on Tuesday evenings, journalism fellowship sessions held every Saturday, as well as Skill Sessions (hybrid and in-community meetings held two Wednesdays a month from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Additional scheduling will be coordinated with the publishing & program team.
  • We are closed for holiday breaks, and the program calendar will reflect it.
  • Key Dates Include:
  • VOX ATL Internship Logistics Call - Thursday, August 6, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.
  • Intern Training (Understanding your role, ambassadorship, media skills, peer editing, and mentorship) - Tuesday, August 11 to Thursday, August 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the VOX ATL Office.
  • VOX ATL Open House - Sat. Aug. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 
  • Weekly Intern Meetings - Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. starting on August 18 (In-person).
  • Skills Sessions - Held two Wednesdays per month from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (alternating between virtual and in-person sessions)
  • VOX ATL Virtual Program Orientation - Sat. Aug. 29
  • First Journalism Fellowship Meeting - Sat. Sept. 5
  • Winter Showcase - Sat. Dec 12 
  • Intern Close Out - Tue. Dec. 15 
  • This position will require in-person leadership, so the intern should be able to work from the VOX ATL office. 
  • You will track your time using VOX’s time-tracking process. Compensation is $12/hour for near-peers, up to 10 hours per week.
  • MARTA Breeze tickets or parking validation will be provided at the VOX office. 


Qualifications:

Applicants must be between 18 and 23 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must have experience in journalism, communications, photography, video and/or audio production. They also need to have created media either through VOX ATL or elsewhere. Applicants must be willing to support positive youth development and principles of power-sharing with teens they support at VOX ATL.
