The Business and Financial Analyst role is a part-time (≈20 hrs/week) contract position reporting to the VP, Operations and sitting on the Business Intelligence & Analysis team. The core purpose is to deliver accurate, timely business and financial analysis that supports VideoLabs’ Business Development and Licensing efforts—especially around patent acquisitions and licensing campaigns.

THE POSITION 

The Business and Financial Analyst is a key member of the Business Intelligence & Analysis team. Reporting to the VP, Operations, you will partner closely with our in-house and external analysis function to provide accurate, detailed and timely business and financial analysis, providing actionable insight to our Business Development and Licensing teams. You will work directly with our Licensing Executives, Business Development team and extended team of technologists, providing key insights that help drive all aspects of the business.  


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and business due diligence on prospective patent acquisitions, including market sizing, royalty potential, and deal risk assessment. 
  • Research target industries and technology landscapes to identify licensing opportunities and assess the competitive positioning of patent portfolios. 
  • Build and maintain financial models in Excel to project revenue scenarios, estimate damages, and evaluate deal economics under various licensing structures (e.g., lump-sum, running royalty, hybrid). 
  • Analyze publicly available financial information (SEC filings, earnings reports, product revenue data) for potential licensees across the high-tech industry to inform licensing demand calculations and royalty estimates. 
  • Compile and synthesize data from patent databases, industry reports, public financial filings, and proprietary research tools to support company Business Development and Licensing operations. 
  • Create and maintain detailed company and market level analysis and financial models, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery of all materials. 
  • Assist in the preparation of licensing campaign materials including licensing decks, financial summaries, technology overviews, and presentation packages. 
  • Ensure all work product is transparent, reproducible, and well-supported with publicly available data, maintaining all source and backup materials. 
  • Prepare written analyses, research memos, and internal reports summarizing findings on target products and services, companies, technology markets, and patent portfolios. 
  • Work closely with licensing executives, legal professionals, and technologists to refine analyses and incorporate feedback. 
  • Monitor industry news, M&A activity, product launches, and technology trends relevant to active licensing campaigns and portfolio strategy. 
  • Assist with preparation of materials for meetings with outside counsel, licensing targets, and investment partners. 
  • Maintain organized files and documentation to support audit trails and institutional knowledge retention. 


BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE 

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a closely related field.  MBA strongly preferred. 
  • 3-5 years of experience in business analysis, financial analysis, investment research, management consulting, or a related analytical role. 
  • Proficiency in AI models for research and analysis, Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling, scenario analysis, pivot tables, lookups, and data visualization. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for preparing professional-quality reports, memos, and client-ready presentations. 
  • Experience analyzing SEC filings, 10-Ks, 10-Qs, earnings releases, and financial statements of publicly traded high-tech companies. 
  • Exceptional research skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information from multiple sources into clear, actionable analysis. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • High attention to detail, analytical rigor, and ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information with professionalism and discretion. 
  • Knowledge of the high-tech industry, including semiconductor, software, cloud computing, networking, mobile, or consumer electronics sectors. 
  • Working knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Windows operating system. 
  • Familiarity with intellectual property, patent law fundamentals, or technology licensing; prior exposure to a law firm, or patent licensing entity is a significant plus. 
  • Exposure to patent damages methodologies (reasonable royalty analysis, lost profits, SSPPU/EMVR) or technology valuation concepts is a plus.
