About the Role
We are hiring a Backend Engineer to help build the foundational systems that power Vida’s AI Agent Operating System.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on backend product development, systems design, data modeling, API design, integrations, reliability, and production operations. You will work on the services and infrastructure that allow agents to communicate, automate workflows, connect to external systems, process events, and operate reliably for real customers.
We care more about strong engineering fundamentals than experience with any specific language or framework. Our primary stack includes Node.js, PostgreSQL, and AWS, but we are looking for someone who can learn quickly, make thoughtful technical decisions, and choose the right tools for the problem.
You will partner closely with product, engineering, design, customer-facing teams, and company leadership to turn ambiguous product and infrastructure needs into well-designed, maintainable software.
This is an ideal role for a strong backend engineer who wants broad ownership, meaningful product impact, and the opportunity to help build foundational software for AI agents at an early-stage company.
What You’ll Work On
Vida’s product is powerful and technically complex. Your job will be to help make the platform reliable, scalable, maintainable, and ready for increasingly sophisticated AI agent use cases.
Examples of engineering problems you may work on include:
- Designing and building backend services, APIs, and data models for agent creation, configuration, execution, monitoring, analytics, tasks, inboxes, and integrations.
- Improving the reliability and scalability of systems that support voice, messaging, workflow automation, and computer-use agents.
- Building observable systems with logging, metrics, monitoring, and alerting to diagnose and prevent production issues.
- Designing efficient PostgreSQL schemas, queries, migrations, and relational data models.
- Integrating with third-party platforms such as communications providers, CRMs, scheduling systems, billing platforms, and internal business tools.
- Supporting event-driven workflows, data pipelines, ETL processes, and operational reporting.
- Improving system architecture so the platform can support more customers, resellers, organizations, agents, and workflows over time.
- Writing automated tests and improving development practices that help the team ship high-quality software with confidence.
What You’ll Do
Backend Product Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality production software for Vida’s core platform.
- Implement scalable backend services, APIs, distributed workflows, and integrations.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into simple, well-structured technical solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code with a focus on long-term simplicity rather than short-term hacks.
- Design efficient, well-modeled relational databases and write strong SQL for production use cases.
- Build backend systems that are reliable, observable, secure, and easy to operate.
- Work closely with product and frontend engineering to ship thoughtful end-to-end product experiences.
Systems, Reliability, and Operations
- Help improve the reliability, scalability, and performance of Vida’s backend systems.
- Use logs, metrics, monitoring, and debugging tools to investigate complex production issues.
- Identify and address root causes rather than applying surface-level fixes.
- Improve internal tooling, operational workflows, and engineering processes as the platform grows.
- Participate in architecture discussions and help make pragmatic technical decisions.
- Support production systems with a strong sense of ownership and care for customers.
Engineering Culture
- Participate in thoughtful code reviews, both giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- Help maintain a high bar for code quality, testing, documentation, and system design.
- Communicate proactively in a fully remote environment.
- Collaborate effectively with a small engineering team while also being comfortable working independently.
- Learn new technologies quickly and evaluate tools based on the problem rather than personal preference.
What We’re Looking For
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and maintain high-quality production software.
- Experience designing and implementing scalable backend services, APIs, and distributed systems.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, independent judgment, and ability to reason clearly about tradeoffs.
- Clean, well-structured, maintainable coding style with a focus on long-term simplicity.
- Strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and system architecture.
- Strong SQL skills and experience designing efficient, well-modeled relational databases.
- Experience writing automated tests and treating testing as an integral part of the development process.
- Comfort participating in thoughtful code reviews and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- Experience building observable systems using logging, metrics, and monitoring to diagnose and prevent production issues.
- Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently investigate complex issues.
- Comfort working independently in a fully remote environment while communicating proactively and collaborating effectively with a small engineering team.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and choose appropriate tools based on the problem rather than personal preference.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Node.js and the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem.
- Experience with PostgreSQL.
- Experience building applications on AWS.
- Experience integrating with Stripe or other payment platforms.
- Experience designing or implementing data pipelines, ETL processes, or event-driven data workflows.
- Experience working at an early-stage or growing SaaS company.
- Experience with AI, automation, agent, telephony, CRM, customer support, or workflow products.
- Experience working on multi-tenant platforms, reseller systems, or partner-facing software.
What Success Looks Like
In your first few months, you will help Vida ship reliable backend systems that improve the quality, scalability, and maintainability of the core platform.
You will contribute to production features, improve backend architecture, strengthen observability and testing, and help the team move faster without sacrificing quality.
Over time, you will become a trusted owner of important backend systems, helping Vida scale the platform for more customers, more agents, more integrations, and more complex AI workforce use cases.

Compensation for this role will be based on experience, location, technical strength, and scope fit.
