About the Role

Ventaris Surgical is seeking a Director, Finance & Accounting to serve as the operational finance leader of the company and a trusted partner to the CEO and leadership team. This is a critical hire for a business at an exciting stage of growth. The Director will own the day-to-day accounting and finance functions, build the financial infrastructure needed to scale, and help ensure the company has the visibility and controls in place to make sound decisions as we advance our technology and expand the team.


Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Close

  • Own the full accounting function including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and expense management
  • Lead timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, producing financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Establish and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and accounting procedures appropriate for a growing early-stage company
  • Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, banking partners, and tax advisors, coordinating the annual audit and tax filings

Budgeting, Planning, and Reporting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with department heads, tracking actuals versus budget and providing regular variance analysis
  • Maintain cash flow models and runway projections, keeping leadership informed on the company’s financial position and key burn metrics
  • Prepare financial reporting packages for leadership, the board, and investors, including monthly financial statements and key performance metrics
  • Partner with the CEO and department leaders on resource allocation decisions, headcount planning, and vendor spend management

Equity Administration and Compliance

  • Oversee cap table management, stock option administration, and equity program compliance in coordination with legal counsel
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local tax requirements and maintain proper business registrations and filings
  • Support due diligence requests from investors and other external parties as needed, maintaining organized financial records and data room materials
  • Build scalable financial systems and processes that can grow with the company, identifying and implementing tools that improve efficiency and accuracy

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate with operations, R&D, and clinical teams to support project-level financial tracking and cost management
  • Serve as a resource and thought partner to department heads on budget management, purchasing decisions, and financial best practices
  • Support the CEO in preparing financial updates for board meetings and investor communications, including financial summaries and KPI dashboards
  • Help evaluate vendor contracts, leases, and other financial commitments, flagging risks and providing financial analysis to support decision-making
  • Thrive in ambiguity and bring structure to unstructured situations, proactively identifying what the company needs before being asked

Startup Finance Mindset

  • Wear multiple hats and take ownership across the full finance and accounting spectrum, from running payroll to presenting financial results to leadership
  • Build financial infrastructure that is right-sized for today while positioned to scale as the company grows headcount, revenue, and complexity
  • Bring a scrappy, get-it-done attitude while still maintaining the rigor and accuracy that investors, auditors, and regulators expect


Requirements

  • 6 to 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, with meaningful hands-on responsibility in day-to-day accounting and financial operations
  • Prior experience in a startup or early-stage company, ideally in a first or sole finance hire capacity where you built processes from scratch
  • Strong command of GAAP accounting, financial close processes, and the fundamentals of financial reporting and controls
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar) and strong Excel skills for budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
  • Comfortable managing competing priorities and working independently without a large finance team around you
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and reliable, with a track record of meeting deadlines and producing accurate work
  • Clear, confident communicator who can translate financial data into plain language for a non-finance audience including the CEO and department heads
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and a genuine comfort with the ambiguity and pace that comes with working at a small, fast-moving company
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive financial and employee information with discretion

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field
  • CPA strongly preferred; MBA is a plus but not required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the medical device, diagnostics, or broader life sciences sector, or another regulated industry
  • Prior work at a venture-backed startup navigating the transition from development-stage to commercial-stage operations
  • Familiarity with FDA-regulated environments and an understanding of how regulatory and development timelines affect financial planning and burn rate
  • Experience supporting a fundraising process, including organizing financial data, maintaining a data room, or preparing board-level financial materials
  • Hands-on experience implementing or optimizing financial systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, Expensify, Rippling, or similar platforms in a startup context.

Salary

$180,000 - $210,000 per year
