Residential Tile Installation
We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented Residential Tile Installer to join our construction and remodeling team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing tile installation projects from prep to completion in residential homes (both new construction and high-end renovations). The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of layout design, waterproofing systems, substrate preparation, and precision cutting for various materials, including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and glass.
Duties and Responsibilities
Surface Preparation: Evaluate, clean, and level substrates. Install cement backer boards, wire lath, mud beds, and uncoupling membranes (e.g., Schluter systems). Apply appropriate waterproofing membranes in wet areas like showers and tub surrounds.
Layout & Measurement: Read blueprints or design sketches to calculate material needs. Measure and mark layout lines using lasers, levels, and plumb bobs to ensure symmetrical, visually balanced, and straight patterns.
Cutting & Shaping: Precisely cut and shape tiles to fit around outlets, plumbing fixtures, corners, and unique architectural features using wet tile saws, grinders, manual snap cutters, and tile nippers.
Installation: Mix and apply thin-set mortar or mastic using the correct notched trowels. Set tiles firmly into place, maintaining uniform spacing and flatness using tile leveling and leveling-spacer systems.
Grouting & Finishing: Mix and apply standard, polymer-modified, or epoxy grout into joints. Clean excess grout efficiently to prevent grout haze. Apply color-matched silicone caulking to expansion joints and changes of plane.
Repair & Maintenance: Diagnose and replace cracked, loose, or damaged tiles and repair failing grout lines in existing residential spaces.
Site Safety & Cleanup: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace. Clean tools and dispose of construction debris daily according to safety regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
Experience: Minimum of 2–4 years of professional residential tile installation experience (apprenticeship completion is a plus).
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of industry standards (TCNA guidelines), waterproofing methods, and thin-set mortar chemistry for different tile profiles.
Tool Proficiency: Mastery of power and hand tools, including wet saws, angle grinders, smart drills, laser levels, and specialty trowels.
Mathematical Skills: Excellent basic math skills for precise measuring, area calculation, and material estimation to minimize waste.
Detail-Oriented: A sharp eye for pattern recognition, color consistency, alignment, and finishing details (mitered edges, schluter trim profiles).
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 60 lbs) including tile boxes and mortar bags.
Ability to spend extended periods bending, kneeling, reaching, and standing on hard surfaces.
Strong hand-eye coordination and physical stamina.
