The Sitework/Pipework Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment to support underground utility installation, grading, and general site development activities. This role works closely with foremen, pipe crews, and laborers to install storm drain, sanitary sewer, waterline, and other underground infrastructure while maintaining production goals, safety standards, and quality workmanship.

Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, rollers, and off-road trucks to support sitework and underground utility operations.
  • Perform trench excavation, backfill, and fine grading in accordance with project plans and specifications.
  • Assist with installation of storm drainage, sanitary sewer, waterline, and other underground piping systems.
  • Set and place pipe, structures, and bedding materials with proper slope and alignment.
  • Maintain trench safety practices including proper sloping, shoring, and safe access/egress.
  • Work around existing utilities and coordinate with spotters/crews to avoid damage.
  • Follow grade stakes, laser levels, and/or GPS machine controls when required.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic preventive maintenance (greasing, fueling, fluid checks, cleaning).
  • Report equipment issues or unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and support overall jobsite productivity.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years experience operating equipment in sitework and/or underground utility installation.
  • Ability to operate excavators and other heavy equipment safely and efficiently around crews and utilities.
  • Knowledge of pipe installation processes (bedding, slope, trenching, backfill, compaction).
  • Ability to read grade stakes and basic construction plans.
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety requirements, including trench safety.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to work in outdoor conditions year-round.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GPS equipment systems (Topcon, Trimble, Leica, etc.).
  • CDL license (Class A or B).
  • OSHA 10/30 certification.
  • Confined space or trench safety training.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and dusty environments.
  • Ability to climb in and out of equipment multiple times per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work around active construction zones for extended periods.

Work Environment

This position works on active construction jobsites with exposure to heavy machinery, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions. Safety awareness and communication are critical.
