Transom Story Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to championing new voices in audio storytelling. Through workshops, public programs, editorial publishing, and the Transom Festival, we train, mentor, and publish a new generation of audio producers. In recent years, our work has expanded to include narrative training for scientists, community members, and other non-journalists who have a story to tell. Overview

The Programs Director oversees Transom's workshops, storytelling programs, editorial publishing, and public programming. This role ensures programs are executed smoothly, maintain high editorial standards, and support the development of new audio storytellers.


This position reports to the Executive Director.

SALARY

$70,000-$90,000, determined by experience.

Responsibilities

Workshop & program management 

  • Oversee Transom Traveling Workshop and related training programs
  • Manage Science Storytelling workshops and related initiatives
  • Coordinate program schedules, logistics, and timelines
  • Oversee participant application processes
  • Manage scholarship administration and participant communications

Instructor & faculty coordination

  • Recruit and coordinate workshop instructors
  • Manage instructor contracts and logistics
  • Support instructors in curriculum development

Editorial publishing 

  • Oversee publishing on Transom.org
  • Edit and manage contributor pieces
  • Coordinate audio editing and story development for site publication
  • Maintain editorial calendar and contributor relationships
  • Note: The Executive Director serves as editor for major Transom Specials.

Public programming, evaluation, and budget 

  • Coordinate occasional public events and programming
  • Conduct participant surveys and program evaluations
  • Manage program budgets; coordinate with Director of Ops & Dev on financial reporting

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of program management or editorial leadership in audio, journalism, or public-interest media
  • Strong editorial judgment; knowledge of audio storytelling craft
  • Background producing or editing in audio, podcasts, or public radio
  • Experience managing programs end-to-end (recruitment, logistics, evaluation)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently

Preferred

  • Experience managing instructor or contractor relationships
  • Experience with in-person educational experiences
  • Familiarity with Transom's work and the broader independent audio community
