School-age Teacher Job Description

Reports to Center Director


Position Summary:

The School-Age Teacher is responsible for providing a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for children of school age before and after school and during school breaks. When school-aged children are attending school, this role may also support other classrooms or assist with additional duties throughout the center to help maintain smooth daily operations. This role focuses on supervision, enrichment activities, homework support, and social development while maintaining a positive and structured atmosphere. The ideal candidate is energetic, dependable, and enjoys working with older children in a childcare setting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and care for school-aged children during before- and after-school hours, school closures, and summer programs.
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities, including games, crafts, STEM activities, outdoor play, and group projects.
  • Provide homework assistance and encourage positive study habits as appropriate.
  • Promote positive behavior, teamwork, and respectful communication among children.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom and activity areas.
  • Follow all center policies, state licensing regulations, and health and safety guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with families and center staff regarding daily activities or concerns.
  • Support transitions, snack times, and daily routines.
  • Assist in other classrooms or perform additional center duties when school-aged children are at school, which may include classroom support, coverage for breaks, or general center tasks as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and center events as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in education, child development, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with school-aged children in a childcare, after-school, or educational setting preferred.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan engaging activities for a variety of interests and ages.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently.


Working Conditions:

  • Active role requiring standing, walking, outdoor supervision, and participation in physical activities.
  • Flexible hours based on school schedules, including early mornings, afternoons, and school breaks.
  • Compliance with all state licensing and health and safety requirements.

 

Salary

$10 - $15 per hour
