The Therapeutic Recreation Intern's role is to assist in all aspects of programming and administration within The Traveling Gnomes. The Intern will be overseen by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) while performing various tasks as outlined by NCTRC. The Therapeutic Recreation Internship will be individually designed around agency needs, university or college requirements, and the intern’s goals and objectives.

Description

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any college student attaining a degree in therapeutic recreation or recreational therapy that meets NCTRC guidelines
  • Consent to a background & driving record check
  • Current CPR & First Aid (must stay current for the duration of the internship)
  • Must abide by agency Covid-19 protocols
  • Ability to implement agency vision, mission, values
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assess and change plans accordingly
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, initiative, and exercise personal judgment
  • Strategic thinker who communicates professionally and effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, prospects, and community stakeholders
  • Possess a U.S driver's license


A PLUS BUT NOT A MUST!

  • Possess a U.S. passport
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to work at high altitudes in varying conditions (we are in the Mile High City and like to venture into the mountains for programming! )
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs individually
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 75 lbs. with assistance
  • Able to successfully manage multiple, high-priority tasks in a fast-paced and often crowded and noisy environment


RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

  • Assist in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of all programs
  • Planning and implementation of weekly Gnomes on the Road trips
  • Assist in the start-up and planning of seasonal skill-building activities
  • Keeping track of any needed internship documentation
  • Assist with the onboarding of new Travelers & Trailblazers
  • Develop an internship project that will benefit the agency and be sustainable
  • Individual Program Plan- the intern will develop an individual program plan for one participant each week for 5 weeks. The individual program plan will contain an assessment (traveler application), goals and objectives, program plan (trip schedule), progress notes, and evaluations
  • Attend all in-house training
  • Attend bi-weekly intern meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned


TIME REQUIREMENT

  • Interns must be able to commit to 14 consecutive weeks, 560 hrs (35 - 40hrs a week) with work days to include weekends. Program locations are determined by activity schedule.
  • Internship start date is flexible pending Site Supervisor and Academic Supervisor approval
  • Internship may be extended to meet additional requirements

  • A professional experience that fulfills the requirements of the College or University
  • A meaningful, practical experience for the Intern under qualified professional supervision, including periodic evaluation and feedback
  • An opportunity for the student to relate to, interact with, and learn from an experienced CTRS
  • An opportunity for the student to enhance or improve the present Therapeutic Recreation program(s) under qualified professional supervision
  • An opportunity for the Intern to establish realistic goals (based on evaluation of their experiences and performance) for their own professional development
  • The opportunity to observe and develop the skills necessary to be an effective team member
  • Opportunities to develop direct leadership skills and supervisory skills.
  • Opportunity to interact with and work with a wide variety of individuals who have disabilities
  • Prepare the student for an entry-level position within the field of Therapeutic Recreation
  • Meet NCTRC fieldwork requirements and work closely with the educational institution's student intern supervisor/advisor
