The Cellarman is responsible for supporting daily brewery operations by maintaining a clean, safe, and organized cellar while ensuring the quality of beer throughout the production process. This role performs cleaning and sanitation of brewing equipment, transfers and carbonates beer, cleans and fills kegs, maintains draft systems, records production data, and assists with beer transportation and special events. The Cellarman works closely with the brewing team to uphold quality standards, follows all safety and sanitation procedures, and provides a positive representation of the brewery during guest interactions and beer festivals. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, physical stamina, the ability to work independently, and a passion for craft beer.

As a Cellarman at The Tap Brewery, you'll play a critical role in every stage of the brewing process after the beer leaves the brewhouse. From maintaining spotless equipment to preparing beer for our guests, your work directly impacts the quality of every pint we serve.

Role & Responsibilities

As a Cellarman, you will help maintain the highest standards of beer quality, cleanliness, and brewery operations by performing the following duties:

Cellar Operations

  • Clean and sanitize brite tanks and fermentation vessels through both CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems and manual cleaning.
  • Clean and sanitize brewery hoses.
  • Clean, sanitize, and pressurize kegs.
  • Operate the keg washer.
  • Fill kegs for distribution.
  • Transfer finished beer between vessels.
  • Carbonate beer and accurately use and read a beer carbonation tester.
  • Clean and sanitize yeast vessels.
  • Conduct pH testing.
  • Conduct gravity testing.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness throughout the cellar and brewery.

Quality & Record Keeping

  • Accurately record production and process data.
  • Follow brewery quality standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Draft Systems & Distribution

  • Clean and maintain draft systems at all designated locations.
  • Transport beer from the brewery to other company locations.

Safety

  • Safely handle brewery chemicals, including caustic/alkaline cleaners, nitric acid, and sanitizers.
  • Properly utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times.

Guest Experience & Events

  • Represent The Tap Brewery during guest interactions.
  • Participate in beer festivals and brewery events.
  • Assist with special events as needed.
  • Demonstrate strong public speaking and guest relations skills.

Team Support

  • Report directly to the Assistant Brewer or Head Brewer.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Brewer.

Qualifications

We're looking for someone who is dependable, motivated, and excited to be part of a growing craft brewery.

Required qualifications include:

  • Complete understanding of the brewing process from raw ingredients to finished product.
  • Strong independent work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable adapting quickly to changing priorities.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements

This is an active, physically demanding position. Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand for 8+ hour shifts.
  • Work comfortably in confined or tight spaces.
  • Work safely in elevated areas.
  • Work in temperatures ranging from approximately 40°F–110°F for extended periods throughout the year.
  • Repeatedly lift between 45–175 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following experience is highly valued:

  • Previous brewing or cellar experience.
  • Strong beer knowledge.
  • Cicerone certification.
  • BJCP certification.
