Position: High School Science, Engineering, and Electronics Instructor

Start Date: Planning hours allotted summer 2025, class begins Sept. 2025

Schedule: Mondays 9:00am - 11:45pm + 2 hours of planning time per week, = 4.75 hours/week; option to add an additional class on Monday afternoons 12:30pm - 2:30pm. Additional hours available throughout the week. 

Compensation: $20 per hour

Grades: 9th-12th

Location: The Social Microschool in Zeeland, MI


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in creating engaging PBL-driven curricula aligned with UbD principles.
  • Teach science concepts with a focus on physics, integrating math and chemistry as needed.
  • Guide students in engineering, electronics, and robotics projects - RC/drone building, testing, and flying is a plus.
  • Utilize competency-based assessment methods to develop and evaluate students' skill-building progress.
  • Encourage hands-on exploration, fostering a "what if" mentality to inspire creativity and innovation.
  • Incorporate entrepreneurship lessons, drawing from personal experiences of success or failure.
  • Support and mentor students in applying interdisciplinary knowledge to real-world challenges.


Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
  • Strong foundation in science education, particularly physics.
  • Familiarity with chemistry, math, and engineering concepts.
  • Experience:
  • Proven problem-solving experience in a relevant industry or current engineering student
  • Hands-on experience with electronics
  • Willingness to learn effective teaching strategies required.
  • Experience with homeschooling (either as a parent or former student) is highly desirable.
  • Skills and Attributes:
  • Passion for making, tinkering, and deconstructing to learn how things work.
  • A growth mindset and commitment to fostering the same in students.
  • Understanding and appreciation of alternative intelligence theories.
  • Ability to connect with and inspire students with diverse learning styles.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit:
  • Personal experience with entrepreneurial endeavors, including lessons learned from failures.
