Role Overview:
Board members of The Next IT Girl serve as fiduciaries, strategic advisors, and ambassadors for the organization’s mission to empower the next generation of women in technology. Members are responsible for providing governance, financial oversight, and strategic direction while actively supporting fundraising efforts and championing the organization's work in the community.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Governance and Oversight
- Understand and uphold the mission, vision, values, and goals of The Next IT Girl.
- Provide strategic guidance and leadership to advance the organization’s mission and growth.
- Ensure legal and ethical integrity, sound governance practices, and compliance with non-profit laws and regulations.
- Approve and monitor organizational policies, annual budgets, and strategic plans.
2. Financial Stewardship
- Review and approve financial reports, budgets, and audits.
- Protect the organization’s assets and ensure its financial sustainability.
- Make an annual personal financial contribution at a level that is meaningful to the individual.
- Actively participate in fundraising and resource development efforts, including leveraging personal and professional networks.
3. Engagement and Participation
- Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in Board meetings (at least 75% attendance expected).
- Serve on at least one committee and contribute actively to its work.
- Participate in organizational events, campaigns, and Board retreats.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of the organization and the Executive Director through appropriate processes.
4. Advocacy and Ambassadorship
- Actively promote The Next IT Girl in the community and among professional networks.
- Assist with cultivating relationships with potential donors, partners, and collaborators.
- Represent the organization positively and consistently at external events, meetings, and functions as needed.
5. Board Development
- Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and mentoring new Board members.
- Participate in Board self-assessments and continuous improvement efforts.
- Commit to ongoing learning about non-profit governance and the evolving needs of the organization.
General Expectations:
- Maintain confidentiality of Board discussions and organizational matters.
- Disclose any potential conflicts of interest and adhere to conflict-of-interest policies.
- Support Board decisions once made.
- Act in the best interests of The Next IT Girl at all times.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission of empowering young women in technology.
- Leadership experience in nonprofit, corporate, government, or academic sectors preferred.
- Ability to think strategically and act with integrity.
- Willingness to actively engage in fundraising efforts and organizational promotion.
- Skills in one or more areas such as technology, finance, law, marketing, education, fundraising, or non-profit management and governance are highly valued.
Term:
- Board members serve a two-year term, renewable according to The Next IT Girl’s Bylaws.
This is a volunteer, unpaid position.
