Birth Assistants will directly assist the CNM in caring for the family during labor and early postpartum, act as the "second pair of hands" during births and/or emergencies, and directly assist the family immediately following birth and during the postpartum period. Births may occur as home births or in Tandem’s birth center once licensure is complete.

Birth Assistants will directly assist the CNM in caring for the family during labor and early postpartum, act as the "second pair of hands" during births and/or emergencies, and directly assist the family immediately following birth and during the postpartum period. Births may occur as home births or in Tandem’s birth center once licensure is complete. 


Requirements: 


  • Currently licensed as a registered nurse, LPN or EMT in the state of Indiana. 
  • Experience in Maternity and/or Neonatal nursing. 
  • Aligned with the philosophy of Tandem. 
  • Self-directed in gaining knowledge and skills. 
  • Participates in ongoing, regular skills and emergency drill training at Tandem 

 


Expectations: 


  • Available on-call for births according to pre-set 3 month schedule 
  • Births will be reimbursed at a flat rate of $300/birth 
  • All prescheduled duties and training will be reimbursed at $30/hr 
  • Communicate orally and in writing to a wide range of families and staff; assess the learning needs of a particular group or person 
  • Meet the client where they are; adapt the learning experience to the age and ability of the group or person 
  • Possess a broad knowledge base of the emotional, social, physical, and spiritual aspects of the childbearing family from early pregnancy through early parenting.  
  • Possess previous experiences requiring the use of teamwork, project management, research and problem-solving. 

This position 


  • Functions at each birth under the direct supervision of the Midwife 
  • Provides intrapartum support including but not limited to: 
  • Labor support (i.e., fluids, positioning, tub bath, sibling support).  
  • Preparing supplies and/or equipment as needed to complete the set-up of the room for birth.  
  • Monitoring of vital signs and fetal heart tones.  
  • Delivery assistance as needed  
  • Assist with resuscitation if needed.  
  • Assist with third stage or other maternal emergency as needed (fundal massage, administration of oxytocic, prepare IV therapy, call nearest hospital or ambulance).  
  • The birth assistant may care for clients in early labor at the Center under the direction of the midwife. 
  • Provides postpartum support including but not limited to: 
  • Immediate postpartum care 
  • Assess Vital signs. 
  • Ongoing assessment of fundus and bleeding. 
  • Assist with comfort measures. 
  • Assist postpartum parent and newborn with establishing breastfeeding, if desired by client. 
  • Cord blood to lab if indicated. 
  • Postpartum period until discharge 
  • Ongoing assessment of postpartum status regarding bleeding, voiding, fluids and eating, mental adjustment, physical needs. 
  • Ongoing assessment of newborn: respiratory status, color, temperature, neurological status, feeding, activity. 
  • Discharge 
  • Review home care instructions. 
  • Assist family in preparations for going home or departure of clinical team in the event of home birth 
  • Verify family has scheduled home visit within 48 hours. 
  • Accompany family to car (if applicable) 
  • Terminal cleaning and restocking of birth room/birth supplies.  This must be done before birth assistant completes shift.
