Description

We are seeking a motivated and innovative scientist to lead research initiatives focused on microbiome and bacterial pest management, with a specific emphasis on Asparagopsis taxiformis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to advance our understanding of microbiomes in coastal and marine systems, addressing critical challenges such as macroalgal senescence over time and leveraging the potential of microbial fertilizers. By exploring these key areas, the successful candidate will generate actionable insights into bacterial pest management and the role of microbiomes in secondary metabolite production, contributing to a sustainable future for seaweed cultivation and utilization.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Isolate high-quality DNA, optimizing protocols to ensure reproducibility for microbiome 16S and 18S analysis.
  • Investigate the ecology, evolution, and associated microbiomes of A. taxiformis
  • Collaborate with team members and develop a pre/pro-biotic to improve A. taxiformis health, yield, and bromoform content while reducing contaminants. Implement findings across the facility.
  • Conduct bacterial inoculation experiments and pest management experiments
  • Develop and apply bioinformatic tools to characterize the relationship between microbiome communities, lineage, growth, and secondary metabolite production.
  • Actively support the innovation stage-gate process: brainstorming and ideation sessions, concept development, concept screening, feasibility, commercialization and intellectual property development.
  • Contribute to written and oral communications, including peer-reviewed publications, blog posts, social media outreach, and public engagement.
  • Build and maintain databases for microbiome and genetic data.
  •  Mentor student interns and early career research associates and foster a collaborative learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in coastal or marine sciences, microbiology, or a related field with a background in population genetics.
  • Demonstrated experience with population genetic approaches from experimental design to computational analysis.
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques and experimental design, with a strong focus on safety.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to write scientific reports, correspondence, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to contributing to a positive work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in phycology, microbiology, evolutionary ecology, or related fields.
  • Strong bioinformatics expertise, including experience with microbiome analysis and population genetics.
  • Proficiency in R for statistical analysis and data visualization.

Why Join Us?

  • Contribute to cutting-edge research with significant implications for sustainable aquaculture and bacterial pest management.
  • Collaborate with a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of scientists and professionals.
  • Be part of a mission-driven organization dedicated to innovation in marine sciences and environmental sustainability.
