Position Overview
The Prosthetics & Orthotics Intern will gain hands-on exposure to clinical, technical, and operational aspects of an orthotics and prosthetics practice. This internship is designed for students or recent graduates pursuing a career in prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation sciences, or a related healthcare field. Interns will support the clinical team while developing foundational skills in patient care, device fabrication, and clinic operations.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Observe and assist CPOs during patient evaluations, fittings, and follow-up visits
- Help prepare treatment rooms, equipment, and supplies for patient appointments
- Assist with patient setup, transfers, and room turnover as appropriate
- Learn proper documentation standards and clinical workflows
Fabrication & Technical Exposure
- Assist in the fabrication shop under supervision, including basic device prep and finishing tasks
- Learn materials, tools, and safety procedures used in orthotic and prosthetic fabrication
- Support device modifications, repairs, and quality checks as assigned
Administrative & Operational Support
- Assist with intake paperwork, scanning, and organization of patient records
- Support front desk and scheduling workflows as needed
- Gain exposure to insurance, authorization, and documentation processes
Professional Development
- Participate in training, shadowing opportunities, and team meetings
- Learn ethical, professional, and HIPAA-compliant patient care practices
- Receive feedback and mentorship from experienced clinicians and staff
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a related program (prosthetics & orthotics, kinesiology, rehabilitation sciences, engineering, or healthcare-related field preferred)
- Strong interest in prosthetics, orthotics, and patient-centered care
- Ability to communicate professionally with patients, families, and staff
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and work collaboratively
- Ability to stand, walk, lift, and perform light physical tasks in a clinical and shop environment
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Familiarity with basic anatomy and biomechanics
- Comfort working with tools or hands-on tasks
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
