Job Title: Digital Collections Program Manager (Manager II-III)

Organization: SCELC (Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium)

Location: Remote or Telecommute, based in North Hollywood, CA (California-based candidates preferred. We may also consider candidates currently in or relocating prior to employment in Utah, Illinois, North Carolina, or Washington state, with possible exceptions for additional highly qualified candidates.)

About the Position:

SCELC is seeking an experienced and visionary Digital Collections Program Manager to lead the development of new consortial digital collections initiatives. This is a high-impact role for a digital collections professional with a strong record of program management within digital repositories, digital special collections, and archives in academic library environments.

The successful candidate will lead community engagement, professional development, technical support, migration and  system administration, and project management, supporting digital collections that promote access, equity, preservation, and innovation across the SCELC community.

As part of the SCELC strategic plan to enhance the visibility and support our strategic services model, SCELC has recently partnered with JSTOR to subsidize and deliver access to their Digital Stewardship Services. We are also looking toward expansion to other platforms to develop shared infrastructure and staffing to provide continuity and sustainability for our Member libraries’ digital collections programs.

Team: Reporting to the Director of Strategic Library Services and Communications, and collaborating with SCELC staff, the Digital Collections Services Manager position assists SCELC in developing strategic, resilient, and scalable solutions for our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and manage SCELC-wide digital collections programs in collaboration with SCELC libraries and strategic partners. This may include both special collections and archives platforms as well as infrastructure for institutional repositories.
  • Support program particpant libraries’ digital special collections projects within JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services, Tiers 1-3.
  • Establish and promote program documentation and best practices for metadata, interoperability, digital asset management, digitization, technical standards, and discoverability.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant for the SCELC community on digital collections strategy, platform selection, and collaborative project development.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with vendors (e.g., JSTOR), technology providers, and other consortia.
  • Track and evaluate emerging trends in digital scholarship, linked data, AI, and other technologies that support all facets of digital collections management.
  • Support grant development, reporting, and assessment related to digital collections programs.
  • Establish and serve as SCELC co-chair of a new Digital Collections Steering Committee composed of SCELC program participants.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information science.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with digital collections or institutional repositories in an academic or research library setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more digital collections platforms (e.g., JSTOR, CONTENTdm, DSpace, etc.), including metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, METS), ingest and migration workflows, digital asset management, and digitization best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage large-scale projects and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience developing workflows, writing documentation, and providing support to archivists and librarians.
  • Strong understanding of discovery, interoperability, and access mechanisms for digital assets.
  • Knowledge of best practices and standards related to special collections and archives, digital asset management, and digital archiving.
  • Proven ability to lead complex, collaborative projects and to work with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with vendor and partner relations, including working with platforms like JSTOR, ArchivesSpace, or other digital scholarly content aggregators and software hosting providers.
  • Knowledge of applying emerging technology to digital collections, such as AI and metadata automation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with ArchivesSpace, cataloging, and description standards (e.g., EADs, DACS) for special collections and archives.
  • Digital Archives Specialist Certificate from SAA

Compensation:

SCELC offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and location. This is an exempt full-time remote position with flexible scheduling and a commitment to work-life balance. Salary is negotiable, with the starting range expected to be between $75,000 and $82,000.
