Spellbound LARP & Games Retail Associate / MtG Event Host North Hollywood, CA · Part time Company website

Retail associate role focused on hosting welcoming, well-run Magic: The Gathering events.

About Spellbound LARP & Games

Spellbound LARP & Games (formerly Wandering Wizard Trading Company) was founded at the Twin Mask LARP in Southern California to solve a simple problem: players needed access to general goods and costume finishing touches without leaving the game. Built from a pop-up canopy, years of Renaissance Faire experience, and a love of the community, we’ve grown into a trusted source for gear and upgrades that keep you immersed and ready for adventure.

Description

Magic is at its best when it’s welcoming, well-run, and fun—whether you’re a longtime player or someone shuffling up for the first time. Spellbound LARP & Games aims to be a safe community space to gather and play.

As our Retail Associate / MtG Event Host, you’ll help host Commander nights and other Magic events, support players, and keep events organized and fair. You don’t need to be the most competitive player in the room—what matters most is reliability, clarity, and a community-first mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily in-store operations: welcoming customers, answering questions, maintaining a clean and organized space, and helping people find the right gear/game
  • Set up and run MTG events (registration/check-in, pairings as needed, basic rules support, timekeeping)
  • Create a welcoming environment for new players (introductions, table etiquette, helping folks find pods)
  • De-escalate conflicts and enforce store expectations around respectful conduct
  • Coordinate event basics with the owner/operator (format, start time, promos/prizes if applicable)
  • Maintain simple event notes (attendance, common questions, what worked/what didn’t)

Qualifications

  • Comfortable speaking to groups and guiding an event flow
  • Strong customer service instincts and a calm presence
  • Familiarity with Magic: The Gathering formats (especially Commander)
  • Ability to enforce boundaries and expectations respectfully
  • Bonus (not required): judge experience, tournament organizing, WPN familiarity, or event software experience
  • Bonus (not required): experience creating inclusive community spaces

Schedule expectations

  • Part-time: approximately 20 hours/week
  • In-store during open hours; event shifts are typically evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to reliably arrive early for setup and stay through wrap-up

We strongly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in local game stores and hobby spaces—including women, LGBTQ+ folks, people of color, disabled folks, and anyone who’s ever felt “not for me” in a game shop.

Equal Opportunity & Accessibility Note

Spellbound LARP & Games is committed to building a welcoming, respectful environment for customers and staff. We do not tolerate harassment or discrimination.

If you’re excited about the role but don’t meet every qualification, we still encourage you to apply. If you need accommodations during the hiring process, tell us what would help—no details required beyond what’s necessary to support you.
