As a Veterinary Technician Level I or II at SACH, you will participate in client education, patient care, laboratory procedures, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, radiology, and other job duties, as required.


Low-stress feline handling skills are an absolute must for this position. At least 1 year of experience as a veterinary technician or a veterinary technician license is required to be eligible for this position.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The veterinary technician level I or II will be responsible for assisting veterinarians in exams, retrieving lab samples, taking radiographs, providing client education, and other duties as directed by the veterinarians, practice manager, and technician manager.


LEVEL I - II EXPECTATIONS:

LEVEL III EXPECTATIONS - All Level I & II Plus:

  • Is able to place IV catheters consistently, correctly, and sterilely
  • Is able to prioritize and work on Level I & II hospitalized patients without supervision
  • Is able to perform urinary catheter care in level II hospitalized patients
  • Is able to correctly calculate drug dosages with doctor instructions
  • Can induce anesthesia on ASA I-II patients
  • Can consistently use the laryngoscope and efficiently intubate patients
  • Is able to monitor and safely maintain anesthesia on non-critical patients
  • Is able to correctly follow through with duties of surgical and anesthetic procedures thoroughly
  • Can function as a room tech, treatment tech, or surgery tech

  • Knows medical terminology and is able to discuss with clients

  • Can discuss specialty procedures' post-operative care with clients
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the controlled drug logs and consistently logs and invoices said drugs with accuracy.
  • Is able to train new staff on the utilization of the logs.
  • Knows the sample drop-off protocol for receiving, invoicing, and packaging.
  • Is on at least one committee or has at least one project or ambassadorship.
  • Fluently knows veterinary terminology and utilizes it in medical records and while conversing with the team
  • Knows entire department and hospital routine from open to close
  • Has completed a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually
  • Can accurately and efficiently complete any technical task asked of them
  • Can place an IV catheter in a patient experiencing a medical emergency
  • Can quickly and effectively intubate a patient experiencing a medical emergency in any position (dorsal, sternal, lateral)
  • Has mastered venipuncture and catheterization with a 98% success rate on the first try
  • Knows open and closed glove techniques and can scrub in for surgery without supervision
  • Can scrub in and assist during GI Biopsies
  • Can scrub in and assist during an RNA
  • Can monitor and care for patients before, during, and after blood transfusions
  • Can accurately perform blood typing and cross-matching
  • Can collect blood effectively from donor cats and administer it to recipient cats
  • Can quickly calculate emergency drug dosages and fluid rates can direct the flow of the team during a medical emergency
  • Able to prioritize and take charge of Level I - III hospitalized patients without supervision
  • Is able to accurately and consistently prep, assist and take charge of all duties during a specialty surgery
  • Is able to monitor/ maintain anesthesia on critical patients and during specialty procedures
  • Can obtain initial diagnostic quality full mouth dental radiographs in 8 shots or less
  • Can troubleshoot abnormal vital signs during anesthesia and knows when to alert the attending DVM
  • Can correct facility equipment- repairs problems for the department
  • Has proficient knowledge of all drugs in stock.
  • Can troubleshoot all dental equipment
  • Knows names of common surgical and dental instruments
  • Can apply minor bandages and bandages after declaw repairs

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years of veterinary experience, a Veterinary Technician License, and a Veterinary Technician Boarded Specialty Certification


PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Feel and express a genuine love for cats and working in an animal care environment. This is not the job for you if you are not a cat person.
  • Perform basic computer skills, including Vetter and Google functions.
  • Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying patients and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs; requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
