We are seeking a Solutions / Software Architect to design and guide the modernization of aviation and air traffic management systems. The candidate would connect business and operational needs with modern system architectures that are robust, interoperable, and aligned with FAA and National Airspace System (NAS) modernization objectives.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in system-of-systems design, service-based architectures, and mission-critical software engineering. They should be able to work across domains, from legacy system integration to next-generation cloud-native services, while ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance. This is a remote role with occasional travel to customer or partner sites.
Responsibilities
- Support the design of enterprise and system architectures to support aviation and transportation modernization programs.
- Define solution patterns, integration strategies, and migration paths for transitioning legacy systems into modernized architectures.
- Develop and maintain architecture artifacts (e.g., diagrams, models, design documents) that align with FAA/NAS standards and practices.
- Collaborate with systems engineers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure architectural decisions are feasible, scalable, and mission-aligned.
- Guide the selection of technologies, frameworks, and platforms (e.g., service-based, event-driven, cloud-native) to support evolving mission needs.
- Conduct trade studies and technical assessments to inform architecture choices.
- Ensure designs incorporate safety, cybersecurity, trusted information management, and data governance.
- Mentor engineering teams in best practices for system design, software architecture, and interoperability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in software/system architecture and design for large, complex, or regulated systems.
- Proven track record in solution architecture, system integration, and legacy modernization.
- Experience with service-based, microservices, or event-driven architectures.
- Strong communication and leadership skills to work across diverse technical and stakeholder groups.
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (minimum of 3 years).
- Ability to obtain FAA security suitability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Software Architecture, or related field.
- Experience with FAA systems, NAS programs, or other large-scale government/transportation systems.
- Expertise in cloud-native and hybrid architectures (AWS GovCloud, Azure Gov, or on-prem/edge environments).
- Familiarity with MBSE tools, DoDAF, UML, and SysML for architecture modeling.
- Knowledge of aviation data standards (e.g., FIXM, AIXM, IWXXM) and their role in interoperability.
