The Hospice Medical Director provides overall medical direction and leadership for Solace Hospice, ensuring high-quality, compassionate, and compliant hospice care. The Medical Director serves as the attending physician for hospice patients who do not have a chosen attending, provides oversight for all medical aspects of care, and acts as a resource to the interdisciplinary group (IDG). This role ensures that care aligns with hospice philosophy, regulatory standards, and the mission of Solace Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight of hospice clinical services, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Certify and recertify patients for hospice eligibility in collaboration with the hospice team.
  • Serve as attending physician for patients without a primary attending, as needed.
  • Review and approve plans of care and medication profiles for hospice patients.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary group (IDG) meetings and collaborate with team members to address clinical and symptom management needs.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to hospice staff, contract physicians, and community providers.
  • Ensure appropriate pain and symptom management through evidence-based practices.
  • Serve as a medical liaison between the hospice and the community, including hospitals, nursing facilities, and referring physicians.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) activities.
  • Provide education to staff and volunteers regarding hospice philosophy, medical aspects of end-of-life care, and palliative interventions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and clinical integrity of Solace Hospice.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current DEA registration and board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or a related specialty.
  • Hospice and Palliative Medicine certification preferred (or eligibility to obtain).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience, with at least one year in hospice, palliative care, or geriatric medicine preferred.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork and patient-centered care.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to travel to patient homes and facilities as needed.
  • Requires occasional standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Must be able to drive and work in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, or other forms of inclement weather.

Salary

$4,500 - $7,000 per month
