SMJ Communications has an exciting opportunity for a passionate, talented, creative, and research-driven Content Writer to join our team. As a content writer, you will be responsible for developing engaging, informative, and compelling content assets for our clients, including but not limited to blogs, newsletters, op-eds, stakeholder communications, emails, key messaging, and other content assets across client accounts. You will work closely with firm account leaders to develop and implement writing activities, ensure the content you produce aligns with our clients' overall communication strategies, brand voice, and target audiences, and stay informed and up to date on education trends, changes, engagement tactics and strategies for our clients.

ROLE EXPECTATIONS

Account Support

  • Completing writing projects, meeting deadlines and following content requirements in terms of style and project specifications
  • Revising content whenever customers or clients request changes
  • Helping create style guides or suggesting changes to ensure content is consistent and clear
  • Working with customers to define their content needs
  • Conducting research on any given topic and conducting regular research specifically on education centered topics to ensure writing remains relevant in the education space and sector
  • Optimizing articles for SEO and accessibility
  • Writing engaging content for blogs, newsletters, stakeholder communications, talking points, op-eds, case studies, video scripts, infographics and other assets
  • Identifying gaps in content and recommending new topics
  • Editing content to ensure consistency and alignment of voice, grammar, punctuation and style
  • Staying up to date on industry trends to support content development
  • Distilling complex concepts and language into content that is easily understood
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging, branding, and style
  • Work with clients to understand their unique communication needs and develop content that aligns with their business objectives
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends in content writing, digital marketing, and SEO to ensure our clients are always ahead of the curve
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workload to ensure timely delivery of high-quality content

COMPETENCIES 

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for detail and a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style and experience doing this in a role for a minimum of 1-3 years.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to develop content that is well-researched, informative, and engaging
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing content strategies that drive business objectives
  • Familiarity with implementing and applying SEO best practices and the ability to optimize content for search engines
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workload to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners
  • Computer literacy, as content writers use computers to create projects and to communicate with their team through systems including but not limited to (monday.com and Google Drive). 
  • The ability to collaborate with other writers and editors to complete projects
  • Demonstrated experience providing constructive feedback on writing projects in order to bring the project to satisfactory completion
  • Proven work experience as a Content Writer, Copywriter, Reporter/Journalist, or similar role
  • Portfolio of published articles
  • Familiarity with web publications
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English

REQUIREMENTS 

  • Please provide at least 4 writing samples that exhibit your ability to apply writing skills and conventions to specific projects including but not limited to (press releases, op-eds, blogs, newsletters, and articles).
  • Applicants will be required to complete a timed writing exercise to demonstrate their writing skills. 

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

  • 3+ years of experience in a content development setting as a Content Writer, Copywriter, Reporter/Journalist, or similar role

Salary

$40,000 - $55,000 per year
