About SmartCommerce

SmartCommerce. Our roots run deep in digital commerce, from the pioneering days of ‘where-to-buy’ tech to now a decade later our leading position as the best-in-class Frictionless Digital Commerce platform for full funnel shoppable media.
We’re building the technology that connects media, shoppers, and retailers — and we’re looking for people who want to help shape the future of commerce.

Description

Remote (U.S.) · Full-Time · Reports to the CTO

Lead the team behind the full funnel shoppable commerce platform

Every day, SmartCommerce connects CPG brands to retailer product pages and turns browsers into buyers. Behind that is an engineering team that builds and runs the platform, and we’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead it.

You’ll own delivery end to end. That means a team of 10+ engineers, a PHP and Node.js/TypeScript codebase, and the retailer and partner integrations our customers rely on.

This is a leadership role with your hands still on the keyboard. You’ll spend about 70% of your time in the code, designing, writing and reviewing. The rest goes to growing people, running operations and setting direction. You’ll work closely with our Product, Customer Success and DevOps teams.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and grow the team. Hire, coach and develop engineers and managers, and build a culture of ownership, code quality and blameless learning.
  • Deliver predictably. Keep the roadmap realistic, communicate clearly with stakeholders, and own CI/CD, releases and incident response.
  • Own multiple products end to end. Take them from roadmap and architecture through release and production support. You’ll join the on-call rotation and lead escalations that need senior judgment.
  • Own our retailer and partner integrations. Set the standards for onboarding, monitoring, versioning and failure handling so partner issues get caught early.
  • Set technical direction. Guide architecture across our services, including the move from PHP to Node.js. Drive performance, scalability, security and SOC 2 readiness, and make smart build-versus-buy calls.
  • Put AI to work. Partner with Customer Success to turn repetitive support, onboarding and reporting tasks into reliable, monitored automations. Help the team adopt AI coding tools responsibly.
  • Work alongside DevOps. Define and meet SLAs, and manage infrastructure costs.

What you bring

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading engineering managers or large teams as a Director, Head of Engineering or similar
  • Direct management of 10+ engineers, with a track record of hiring, developing and retaining strong people
  • Proven experience building and supporting enterprise integrations with retailers or other third parties (APIs, feeds, EDI or similar, partner onboarding, SLAs)
  • Experience running production systems at scale, including on-call, incident management, monitoring and CI/CD on a cloud platform (AWS preferred)
  • Deep hands-on background in PHP and Node.js with TypeScript, and the ability to guide a PHP-to-Node migration without losing momentum
  • Strong SQL and performance-tuning skills
  • Working knowledge of security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2
  • A clear communicator who can explain trade-offs to executives, product leaders and external partners
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Bonus points for: ad-tech, e-commerce or CPG/retail tech experience; React or Angular, GraphQL, Redis, and Kafka or SQS; leading SOC 2 efforts from the engineering side; rolling out AI coding tools and applying LLM frameworks to operational workflows; and experience at a company of roughly our size, where strategy and hands-on work go together.

What we offer

  • Base salary: $210,000 – $240,000, plus an annual bonus target of up to 10%
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Short-term and long-term disability, plus company-provided life insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Flexible PTO and 8 paid holidays
  • Remote work stipend
  • Fully remote within the U.S. (Eastern U.S. preferred), with minimal travel (up to 5%)

Ready to lead?

If you’re ready to lead a team and stay close to the code, we’d love to hear from you.
