About Shredder Bend

Shredder Bend is Oregon's first year-round indoor ski and snowboard school dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of snow sports to children aged 1 to 10 years old. As an accredited PSIA-AASI member organization, our classes cover fundamental ski/snowboard curriculum to help kids develop the basic technical skills of skiing and snowboarding in a fun and supportive environment.

Description

The Role

This is the first leadership hire at Shredder Bend. It has two halves. You teach, and you help run the place. You'll do everything our instructors do, plus open and close the gym, look after our families, keep the instructor schedule running, and keep the gym in great shape. You'll work directly with the owner and have a real say in how the place runs. If you have a better idea, we want to hear it. The role is designed to grow into a Senior Manager position that runs day-to-day operations.

What You'll Do

Teach (about half your week)

  • Lead engaging ski and snowboard classes, private lessons, camps, and birthday parties, matched to each child's age, ability, and goals.
  • Teach fundamental skills on flat ground and on our slopes over a multi-week program, using the Shredder curriculum.
  • Help kids gear up and gear down (boots, skis or boards, helmets), and keep equipment organized.
  • Use positive behavior management to keep classes safe, focused, and fun.
  • Give parents progress updates that get them excited for the next class or the next mountain day.

Run the gym

  • Open and close the facility. Check families in, run the front desk, and handle phone and email, getting back to parents the same day.
  • Lead safety on every shift: run equipment and slope checks, enforce safety protocols, write up incident reports, and act as the on-site lead for emergencies.
  • Keep the gym, teaching areas, and equipment clean, organized, and in good repair. Track supplies and flag what needs reordering.
  • Cover the building and make day-to-day decisions when the owner is out.

Lead the team and support the business

  • Build and publish the weekly instructor schedule, and arrange cover when someone calls out.
  • Help onboard and train new instructors. Observe classes using the Shredder Class Quality Assessment and coach instructors as they improve.
  • Manage class rosters, enrollment, waitlists, make-ups, and the booking system for sessions, camps, and parties.
  • Be the first point of contact for parent questions and concerns, and resolve issues with care and good judgment.
  • Share what you see on the floor with the owner, including what families are asking for, what's working, and what isn't.

Where It Goes

We're building this role to grow. As you take on more, your title and pay grow with it.

First 90 days

Learn the Shredder curriculum and teach a full class load. Open and close the gym, run the front desk, and get comfortable handling parents. Pay review at 90 days.

First full season

Own the weekly instructor schedule and call-out coverage. Be the first point of contact for families. Help onboard new instructors. Run the building on your own when the owner is out.

Senior Manager

Run day-to-day operations: staffing and scheduling, customer service, gym operations, and instructor hiring and training support. Comes with a new title and a raise to match.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with kids, ideally ages 3–10, in teaching, coaching, camps, childcare, or outdoor programs. This matters more to us than how well you ski.
  • You ski or ride and can teach the basics. No instructor certification is needed to start, and you don't have to be an expert.
  • Some experience leading people or running a shift, such as head counselor, shift lead, coach, ski school or rental supervisor, or classroom lead. No formal management title required.
  • You're good with adults too. You can calm a nervous parent, handle a complaint gracefully, and follow up the same day.
  • You're organized and comfortable with scheduling and booking software, email, and shared calendars.
  • You're reliable. Families plan their week around us, so showing up on time matters more here than almost anywhere.
  • PSIA-AASI certification (especially Children's Specialist), ski school experience, or CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.

Position Requirements

  • Physically able to lift and assist children to help them control speed and balance on the slopes, and to be on your feet and active for most of a shift.
  • Available afternoons, evenings, and weekends, with more hours during camp weeks and school breaks.
  • CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to get certified within 30 days of hire.
  • Must pass Shredder's background screening before working with children.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay: $25–28/hour, depending on experience, with pay reviews at 90 days and after your first full season.
  • Hours: Full-time, hourly, and year-round. Guaranteed 30 hours a week, up to 40 during our peak season (September–April) and camp weeks.
  • Professional development: Shredder will pay for your PSIA-AASI Children's Specialist certification and other relevant industry continuing education.
  • Perks: Free classes for your kids, industry perks, and referral bonuses.
  • Growth: A clear path to Senior Manager as the business grows.

Interested?

Send a short note about where and how long you've skied or ridden, your experience teaching, coaching, or working at camps, any time you've spent leading a team or running a shift, and your availability. Qualified candidates will be invited to an initial interview.
