The IOP evening counselor is responsible for providing confidential counseling, education and support to individuals, and the community and for promoting health lifestyles and healthy choices as well as assisting with supervisory roles as clearly defined by the Program Director.
The Substance Abuse Counselor provides counseling and support to
individuals and families experiencing addiction at Serenity Light Recovery IOP - mainly
at the Upper Kirby location (4-9 M-Th at Upper Kirby location and 10-6 Friday on SLR
main campus). The IOP counselor will help the client integrate recovery into their life at
the outpatient level of care. The daytime IOP counselor will provide a hybrid (in-person
and virtual clients) group counseling for the IOP clients - 3 hours a day (6pm - 9pm) at
the duration of 4 times a week (Mon-Thurs). The beginning hours of the day portion of
the shift will include individual and family counseling about the causes and effects of
addictions, support for families dealing with addictions and/or referrals to treatment for
individuals requesting this opportunity. The counselor will also assist the clinical team on
Fridays at the main campus. Additionally, the counselor will be accurate and timely in
the creation of client treatment plans, and discharge planning. The counselor will also
provide education to individuals and groups in the community with a focus on high-risk
populations including those struggling with chronic relapse, and co-occurring disorders.
The counselor will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and
work closely to provide information and support when required. Serenity Light Recovery
promotes a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle that will ensure the health and wellness of
individuals, family members and the community.
Roles of the Substance Abuse counselor include:
● Reviewing all client pre-screening information and responsible for facilitating the
scheduling of admissions into IOP whether direct admit or step down from SLR
main campus.
● Assess the counseling needs of the client.
● Assessing clients for substance abuse diagnosis using DSM-V criteria in
determining appropriate level of care based on ASAM criteria.
● Responsible for facilitating the admission’s process into all levels of care.
● Responsible of providing orientation for client’s into all levels of care
● Providing substance abuse counseling for assigned clients including individual and
group therapy.
● Interface with the director and other program staff in decision-making process
involving clients to include attending all clinical meetings.
● Obtain previous records that are relevant to the current treatment episode.
● Preparing the substance abuse counseling portion of the client treatment plan.
● Providing the substance abuse counseling services specified in the client treatment
plan.
● Development of the client discharge/continuum of care plan to ensure movement to
the appropriate levels of care.
● Participating fully as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients.
● Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments,
referrals and follow-up in the client’s clinical record using the EMR
● Maintain client caseload (including all case management.
● Treatment planning duties and clinical charting as required.
● Provide coordination of support services for the client and record the services
provided in the client’s clinical record.
● Reassessment of the client and revision of the substance abuse counseling portion
of the client treatment plan.
● Contact and coordination with referral sources, (i.e. legal, school, employer, etc.).
● Facilitate needed interventions for crisis-oriented issues utilizing a multi-disciplinary
team approach for assigned clients.
● Carry out administrative and clinical functions as requested.
● Act in accordance with Serenity Light Recovery policies and federal confidentiality
laws (42-CFR, and Texas DSHS state rules and regulations).
● Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
▪ Bachelor or Master’s Degree specializing in psychology and/or counseling.
▪ LCDC, or LMSW with a current license in good standing.
▪ Previous work experience in the field of substance abuse.
