CONTROLLER
Reports To: CFO | Full-Time, Exempt | Chattanooga, TN (In-Office only)
PURPOSE
The Controller serves as the accounting heartbeat of the firm, partnering directly with the CFO to help drive all functions across a dynamic multi-asset portfolio. This role is at the intersection of finance, operations, and investment analysis — where your precision and ownership relieves senior leadership to focus on strategy. The Controller owns the close schedule, stewards cash flow, and brings financial rigor to investment due diligence.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- Financial Reporting Excellence: You ensure the family office has accurate, timely, and well-organized financial statements and general ledger records, providing leadership with the clarity and confidence needed to make informed decisions.
- Investment Accounting Mastery: You serve as a reliable steward of the portfolio, maintaining precise investment schedules, performance reporting, and capital activity records while collaborating with the Investment Committee to support sound investment decisions.
- Tax Compliance & Planning: You protect the family's financial interests by proactively coordinating with external advisors, ensuring all federal and state obligations are met on time, and contributing meaningful analysis that supports strategic tax planning.
- Operational Integrity: You build and maintain efficient, well-documented financial processes, internal controls, and recordkeeping systems that reduce risk, ensure compliance, and create a seamless operational experience across payroll, real estate, insurance, and charitable activities.
- Trusted Advisor to Leadership: You will guide the executive team by delivering accurate data, anticipating needs, communicating proactively, and consistently finding ways to improve systems and reporting — making you an indispensable partner in managing the complexity of a sophisticated family office.
WHAT YOU BRING
Experience & Technical Skills
- 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience in private wealth or public accounting; private family office work highly desired
- Technical degree required; advanced degree preferred, CPA designation strongly preferred
- Demonstrated exposure to investment accounting and alternative asset reporting
- Prior tax compliance and/or planning experience highly valued
- Strong technical accounting knowledge (GAAP); familiarity with family office or investment fund accounting a plus
