Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide community-based behavioral health support within the QBHA's training, qualifications, and authorized scope of practice.
  • Support youth in developing coping skills, emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, and other identified life skills.
  • Reinforce strategies and goals established through the participant's individualized service or treatment plan.
  • Assist participants in practicing healthy behaviors and skills in real-world settings.
  • Provide encouragement, structure, and accountability.
  • Recognize changes in participant behavior, functioning, or engagement and communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor or clinical team.
  • Support crisis prevention and appropriate escalation in accordance with RMG policies and established safety protocols.
  • Do not independently diagnose, provide psychotherapy, or perform clinical functions outside the contractor's authorized scope.

2. Relationship-Based Youth Engagement

  • Meet participants where they are while maintaining appropriate professional expectations and boundaries.
  • Use active listening, motivational interviewing techniques, strengths-based approaches, and trauma-informed engagement strategies as appropriate.
  • Encourage youth voice, choice, participation, and self-advocacy.
  • Support participants who may be reluctant or hesitant to engage with behavioral health services.
  • Build relationships that promote safety, trust, accountability, and hope.

3. Lived Experience

RMG recognizes lived experience as a valuable form of expertise and welcomes qualified individuals whose personal experiences may strengthen their ability to connect with the youth and communities served. The QBHA may appropriately draw upon lived experience to:

  • Build authentic relationships and reduce stigma surrounding behavioral health services.
  • Help participants feel understood and respected.
  • Demonstrate resilience, accountability, personal growth, and the possibility of change.

  • Model healthy coping, decision-making, and help-seeking behaviors.

The QBHA is expected to:

  • Share personal experiences intentionally and only when doing so benefits the participant.
  • Avoid making assumptions that a participant's experience is the same as their own.
  • Keep the participant's needs and goals at the center of the relationship.
  • Maintain professional boundaries when discussing personal experiences.
  • Never require or pressure youth to disclose trauma or personal information.
  • Understand that lived experience compliments professional training and does not replace clinical supervision, organizational policies, or professional responsibilities.

A degree or traditional professional pathway should not automatically outweigh demonstrated competency, relevant experience, and lived expertise when evaluating candidates, provided the individual meets all applicable requirements for the QBHA role.

4. Individualized Goal Support

  • Assist participants in working toward goals identified in their individualized service plan or other approved plan.
  • Support youth in identifying strengths, interests, and areas for growth.

  • Assist participants in connecting with appropriate community-based resources.
  • Coordinate with authorized members of the participant's support team.
  • Support communication between participants, families, schools, behavioral health providers, and community partners when authorized.

  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with all participants.
  • Never engage in sexual, romantic, exploitative, abusive, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate conduct with a participant.
  • Never use participant relationships for personal, financial, political, or other inappropriate benefit.
  • Use approved methods of communication with youth.
  • Protect confidential and protected health information.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, threats of harm, or other safety concerns in accordance with applicable law and organizational policy.
