Position Summary The Horse Trainer & Riding Instructor is responsible for training horses under the Ridgebury Farm’s care and providing riding instruction to clients of various ages and skill levels. This position requires experience in horsemanship, equine behavior, and rider development. The ideal candidate is patient, safety-focused, and skilled in teaching both foundational and advanced riding techniques. Candidate must also be willing to work in an environment that is highly inclusive of those with special needs, both physical and mental.

Note: This position will start as part-time, between 20-30 hours per week. As the role grows, there may be an opportunity for full-time, 30-40 hours per week. Full-time employees are eligible for health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and 401k matching and paid time off.


Key Responsibilities

Horse Training

  • Develop and implement individualized training plans for horses of varying temperaments and skill levels.

  • Work with young, green, or problem horses to improve performance, behavior, and responsiveness.

  • Maintain conditioning and training routines for program horses to ensure soundness, safety, and suitability for riders.

  • Monitor equine health and behavior, reporting concerns to management and coordinating with veterinary or farrier professionals.

Rider Instruction

  • Provide riding lessons to children, teens, and adults in private, semi-private, or group formats.

  • Teach horsemanship skills including grooming, tacking, stable safety, and groundwork when appropriate.

  • Develop tailored lesson plans based on individual rider goals and abilities.

  • Evaluate and track rider progress; provide feedback and recommendations for advancement.

Program Support

  • Assist with horse selection and matching for lessons or events.

  • Support barn staff with horse handling as needed.

  • Assist during camps, clinics, and special events.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional horse training and riding instruction experience.

  • Strong foundation in English riding.

  • Excellent communication and teaching skills, with a calm and encouraging presence.

  • Knowledge of horse care, equine behavior, and safety protocols.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic farm environment.

  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to become certified).

  • Instructor certification (e.g., CHA, PATH Intl., or equivalent) preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to ride, lunge, and handle horses daily.

  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing physical barn-related tasks.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.


Salary

$21 - $23 per hour
