Job Title and Description

JOB TITLE: Wilderness Camp Child Care Staff

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Temporary, Full-Time

SALARY RANGE: $1300 flat pay for the week

WORK HOURS: 6 days, 2-3 nights. Due to the nature of the camp environment, work hours will vary, and staff will be scheduled for active and inactive periods throughout each day. Staff will have designated on-duty and off-duty periods throughout the camp week. Off-duty time is defined as time in which the employee is fully relieved of responsibilities and is not required to supervise children or remain actively engaged in work duties. Overnight shifts will be assigned in advance. Staff are responsible for active supervision during assigned overnight shifts. On non-assigned nights, staff are considered off-duty and are expected to rest but may be called upon in the event of an emergency. Breaks and off-duty periods will be coordinated daily by camp leadership to ensure appropriate coverage and compliance with wage and hour guidelines.

Scope of Position

They must provide supervision, engagement, and assistance to their camper throughout the day, and share responsibilities for overnight care for a group of children. Each staff must demonstrate that they are capable of communicating and working well as part of a team. They must be organized, proactive, resilient, and able to resolve issues through creative problem solving.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide consistent 1:1 support for assigned camper during on duty hours, including engagement, supervision, and assistance with daily activities
  2. Participate in and actively support all camp activities, alternative downtime activities including group programming, transitions, mealtimes, and outdoor experiences.  
  3. Learn and adhere to schedules and routines, provided by the camp and by parents
  4. Learn and support each child’s individual needs, including behavior plans, toileting routines, bathing routines, feeding techniques, and dietary needs, and sleep routines.
  5. Maintain accurate and timely charting and documentation related to children’s care, activities, meals, behaviors, and other required records.
  6. Communicate professionally with parents and guardians on a daily basis
  7. Maintain a clean, safe and stimulating environment
  8. Completing household duties, including daily cleaning duties as assigned
  9. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children, families, and program information at all times.
  10. Adhere to all health, safety, and medication administration protocols (upon completion of required training)
  11. Other duties as assigned

  4. Medication Certification preferred 


Working Conditions

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain
  • Ability to hike, walk long distances, and participate in outdoor camp activities
  • Ability to live on-site in a shared camp environment for the duration of the program 
  • Ability to communicate professionally via email, phone, and in person
  • Ability to sit, stand and move throughout their shift and actively engage with children for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to safely assist children with activities of daily living including toileting, hygiene support
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to children experiencing emotional distress, behavioral challenges, or medical needs.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, reach, bend at the waist, including carrying and/or lifting children weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in an active and sometimes noisy environment common in group child care settings
  • Ability to follow standard health and safety protocols that may include bodily fluids, cleaning tasks and sanitation protocols


Hours and Time Off

  • Must be available 1:00pm Sunday – 9:00pm Friday for the dates outlined on application
  • Camp activities and camp staff responsibilities typically start ~7:00am and end ~9:00pm each day, but may vary.
  • Breaks will be coordinated between staff each day
  • Staff will also be assigned 2 overnight shifts and 2 afternoon nap time shifts.
  • Due to the nature of camp, staff are expected to remain on- site for the duration of the Wilderness Camp week. Designated off duty periods will be provided daily, during which staff are relieved of active responsibilities.
  • Must be available for pre-camp meeting, as outlined on the application
  • Any time off must be approved in advance by School Age Program Coordinator
