The Connections Pastor is a community builder who loves the church, and loves bringing people together and helping them grow in community as part of the church. The connections pastor plays a vital role fostering discipleship by creating opportunities for people to fellowship, serve, and journey together in their walk with Christ. Through pastoring congregants, fostering small groups, and coordinating volunteer leaders and teams, they will be responsible for helping someone go from being a newcomer to becoming a committed,connected, and growing member of our congregation. We are looking for a people person who loves building community, understands the unique context of church, and has experience identifying and empowering volunteer leaders to do their best work.



  1. Newcomer Welcome & Incorporation
  2. Develop leaders that welcome newcomers into the church and continue to build on current newcomer inclusion process (reaching out to people who are new, creating monthly welcome lunches, etc)
  3. Connect newcomers with opportunities to build relationship with other congregation members, volunteer ministry opportunities, and membership classes
  4. Coach greeting team on creating a welcoming atmosphere on Sunday mornings
  5. Organize membership class 1-2 times/year
  6. Small Group Ministry
  7. Develop small groups (both short-term “launch” groups and ongoing “life” groups) and leaders for small group ministry
  8. Regularly recruit and train new leaders, encourage new participants
  9. Church-wide community
  10. Create opportunities for people in the church to connect with each other (ex. annual “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” meals, all-church retreat, seasonal connection opportunities)
  11. Facilitate fellowship groups and events in the church initiated by congregation members
  12. Pastoral Responsibilities
  13. Meet regularly with congregants to welcome them and let them know opportunities to serve and get connected
  14. Serve with other pastors on staff in fulfilling pastoral duties, including weddings, funerals, baptisms and dedications
  15. Provide pastoral care and counseling for congregation members who are in need
  16. Be available to preach once a quarter


  1. Christian maturity and continued nurture of personal relationship with Jesus.
  2. Natural ability to build community and to help others do the same
  3. High relational capacity for connecting with others both in large events and one-on-one
  4. Strong understanding of church dynamics
  5. Commitment to living out the mission, vision and values of Rainier Avenue Church.
  6. Experience working cross-culturally and a commitment to diversity and racial reconciliation as a biblical value. 
  7. Strong understanding of Wesleyan theology and commitment to the Free Methodist denomination (encouraged to be ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church, or committed to the ordination process).
  8. Ability to communicate well.
  9. Competence with basic administration and computer programs
  10. Maintains confidences and uses discretion in sensitive situations.
  11. Ability to receive direction, take initiative and work both independently and cooperatively as a member of the RAC staff. 
  12. Works well independently, takes initiative to carry out established vision.
  13. Bachelors Degree  or equivalent required. 

Organizational Relationships:

  1. Reports to the Senior Pastor for vision/direction and Executive Administrator for logistical support and oversight.
  2. Works directly with leaders of small groups, welcoming team, and other groups facilitating community (i.e. retreat planning committee)
  3. Maintain working relationship with pastoral team and other staff


  1. Must work Sunday mornings 8am-1pm, Tuesdays for worship service planning meeting 10:30-11am, Wednesdays for staff meeting 10:30am-1pm, evenings and weekends as needed for church events.
  2. Must pass a background check.
  3. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and use of email needed for coordinating projects and budgets. 


  1. Full time FLSA exempt position
  2. Benefits available include three weeks vacation and 72 hours sick time per year, health insurance, and monthly retreat days.  Pension available if ordained in the Free Methodist Church. Further details provided during the interview process.
  3. Employment with Rainier Avenue Church is at will unless otherwise stated in a written agreement signed by the lead pastor or board chair.  This means that either the church or the employee can terminate the employment at any time and for any reason, with or without notice.
