Pre-Health Medical Intern (Paid) - Medical or Surgical Dermatology

Job Description:  

We are seeking a motivated, compassionate, and skilled Prehealth or Medical intern to join our practice full time. This is a 1–2 year position designed for recent college graduates preparing to pursue careers in medicine, physician assistant studies, nursing, physical/occupational therapy, or other health professions.

  • Research opportunities and potential authorship/acknowledgement on scholarly projects (when available).

This is a fast-paced position, and we are eager to on-board an energetic new member to our team!  

 

Key duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Assists patients with medical questions and needs. 
  • Actively listens to patients' medical concerns, gathers facts, dates and additional information to assess needs; follows protocols to determine next steps.  
  • Gathers orders from provider(s) on all pertinent situations to rely information to patient. May request emergency appointments for patients. 
  • Communicates with patients via the patient portal. 
  • Assists practitioners with the initial prescription process, including specialty medications, prior authorizations, etc.  
  • Communicates with insurance or pharmacy as needed. 
  • Handles and approves patients prescription needs including filling request and replacements. Provides patients with prescription samples. 
  • Orders labs & radiology for patients as requested by practitioner. 
  • Orders and coordinates specialty procedures.  
  • Manages pre-authorization process for specialty procedures.  
  • Appropriately documents all procedures. 
  • Provides intramuscular, subcutaneous injections. Educates patients & biologic injection medications. 
  • Completes any prep work needed for patient appointments. Explains procedures to patients.  
  • Explains diagnostic & lab imaging tests and procedures. 
  • Charts all patient interactions in the electronic medical records (ModMed EMA) system. Corresponds with providers and coworkers via fax/phone as necessary. 
  • Assist providers with biopsies/procedures, surgery, and bandaging. 
  • Triage urgent/critical lab results before provider review. 
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

  

Work environment and physical requirements: 

  • Medical office, procedure/exam room, and laboratory environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, biohazards, or toxic substances.  
  • Daily activities may include standing, walking, sitting, bending, and lifting items to 25 lbs. 
  • In person requirement in Austin, Texas. 

 

Education & Experience Requirements: 

  • College graduate (BS, BA) 
  • Comfortable with Macintosh operating system and iPads. 
  • Recent college graduate (Bachelor’s degree required; science/health-related field preferred). 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a compassionate, patient-centered approach. 
  • Professionalism, reliability, and adaptability in a fast-paced clinical environment. 
  • Interest in pursuing a graduate-level career in healthcare. 

  

Preferred:  

  • Prior medical experience 
  • Bilingual in Spanish. 
  • Mod Med EMA EMR experience.
