Associate Producer


Playwrights Foundation, a center for new play development that supports, empowers, and centers playwrights, is looking for a part-time Associate Producer to assist the Literary & Producing Director on implementing artistic, administrative, and production-related tasks to support the success of our playwright-centered programming. The Associate Producer is a year-round, part-time, non-exempt position. The ideal candidate would have experience in new play producing and literary management.


Playwrights Foundation’s office and programming are located in San Francisco, on the traditional lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone people. Work will be hybrid, with in-person hours primarily during the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Resident Playwright readings, and during retreats.


Primary Job Duties:  

  • Assist production needs for public readings and surrounding events for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival (BAPF) and Resident Playwrights Program (RPP), which may include casting, scheduling, artist communications, and day-of production needs, as well as any other play readings/workshops, as needed.
  • Assist BAPF and RPP application selection processes (application cycles alternate and do not run concurrently). Duties include reviewing and discussing applications, supporting recruitment and communication with 125+ readers, and any other admin duties as assigned. 
  • Assist company management duties for out-of-town artists during BAPF, including driving artists, coordinating housing necessities, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Support weekend artistic retreats, as needed.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience in artistic theatre producing, new play development, and artistic play selection experience, or similar artistic development environment.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and strong strategic and analytical thinking.
  • Strong reading skills and artistic analysis skills.
  • Ability to determine promising playwriting skills and interesting voices.
  • Skilled at managing stressful situations and remaining positive and calm under pressure.
  • Strong technical skills, must have experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office, particularly spreadsheets.
  • Production Management experience, Literary Management, Theatre Administrator experience, and/or Technical Theater knowledge are a plus.
  • Must be able to push or pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds, and lift or carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds. 
  • A driver's license and car is a plus.


Hours & Schedule

  • For immediate hire in late July and no later than August 1. 
  • Year-round, part-time employee with an average of 8-10 hours per week. Hours determined in conversation with the Executive Artistic Director and Literary & Producing Director. 
  • Hours fluctuate week to week according to project needs, with more hours during the Bay Area Playwrights Festival (September 2026), Resident Playwrights readings (roughly one a quarter in 2027), and retreats (to be scheduled),  and sometimes no hours during slower periods.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required to support events. 
  • Hybrid with in-person activities in San Francisco. Work will primarily be remote with necessary in-person support for public events on a regular basis. Must have Bay Area housing.

Salary

$22 - $22 per hour
