Expression of interest

We’re always looking to connect with talented writers and copyeditors with strong music backgrounds.

We’re not actively hiring for these roles right now, but Pickup is a growing company, and our content needs continue to expand. We regularly bring on additional freelance support as new opportunities arise.

If you’re a great writer or editor who understands music and music education, we’d love to hear from you and keep your information on file for future opportunities.

About the work

Our writers and copyeditors help create the written content that supports Pickup lessons across guitar, bass, piano, and drums.

Writers take lesson plans, instructor videos, transcripts, and other source material and turn them into engaging educational copy. This can include lesson descriptions, exercise instructions, learning tips, supporting explanations, and other copy that helps members get more from each lesson.

Copyeditors work with our writers to refine that content before it reaches members. They improve clarity and consistency, provide editorial direction, verify music-theory concepts, and make sure the final copy meets Pickup’s educational and editorial standards.

Some freelancers may specialize in one area, while others may be comfortable doing both.

Our goal is always lean, purposeful writing that complements the instructor rather than repeating them. Pickup isn’t a textbook: our copy is concise, conversational, and focused on helping members learn.

A note on the use of AI: At Pickup, we encourage the use of modern tools to enhance your work and speed up your process. That said, you’re ultimately responsible for creating natural, human copy that feels authentic and never reads like it was generated by a machine.

You could be a great fit if:

  1. You’re a skilled musician with a strong understanding of music theory.
  2. You’re an excellent writer, editor, or both.
  3. You have strong knowledge of at least one of our core instruments: guitar, bass, piano, or drums. Experience across multiple instruments is a big plus.
  4. You can translate musical and educational concepts into concise, approachable language for learners at different skill levels.
  5. You have an eye for lean, purposeful copy that supports learning rather than getting in the way of it.
  6. You have an exceptional command of US English and write at a native level.
  7. You’re comfortable receiving feedback, working within an established voice, and collaborating with a remote team.

Submit your interest

If this sounds like a good fit, we’d love to learn more about you. Submit your information below, and we’ll reach out if an opportunity comes up that matches your experience.

A note for copyeditors: Copyediting is a specialized role, and we’re looking for applicants with demonstrated copyediting experience

  • If you’re interested in copyediting, please only submit for this role if you have previous experience editing other writers’ work in a professional capacity.
  • Being a strong writer is required, but writing experience alone isn’t sufficient for the copyeditor role.
