About Orcas Island Children’s House

We are a Reggio Emilia-Inspired Infant-Toddler Center and Preschool located on Orcas Island, Washington. In 1969, island parents came together to create a playgroup for children to play and learn. This grassroots effort was a way to bring together children and give them the best start in life. This group evolved over the years to become what it is today - Orcas Island Children’s House: an early learning and care center for children birth through age six. Children’s House is situated on a historic Lavender Farm, surrounded by a heritage pear orchard. The Farmhouse, built in 1900, has been our home since 1974. In 1997, we broke ground on a new facility right next door to the farmhouse that is our Infant and Toddler Center today. Children’s House is here today serving children and families as a result of hundreds of volunteers, donors, teachers and parents over the years. The program owes its success and longevity to the islanders who built and sustained this special place just for children.
