Build the full-stack product engineers use every day from interactive 3D geometry visualizations in the browser to the APIs and cloud infrastructure that power them

About Open Orion, Inc.

We are an early stage research and design company with the mission to supercharge engineering using AI + simulations. Our goal is to streamline intricate design workflows, elevate performance and efficiency, and boost overall productivity. Right now we are in stealth but stay tuned for some exciting developments later this year.

Description

The Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer who can work across the entire stack, frontend, backend, and everything in between. You'll build the product that engineers actually use: interactive 3D visualizations of complex geometry, the APIs and infrastructure behind them, and the data pipelines that connect simulation results to a beautiful UI. On a small team, you won't be siloed. You'll touch React components in the morning, cloud infrastructure after lunch, and geometry processing before dinner. Please link Github or Portfolio of nontrivial notable work above all else.

What You'll Do

  • Build responsive, intuitive interfaces in React for engineering design applications
  • Create interactive 3D visualizations using Three.js to let users explore geometry, meshes, and simulation results
  • Design and implement scalable APIs in Python and Node.js
  • Architect and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS
  • Build data pipelines that move geometry and simulation data between services efficiently
  • Work with real-time data via WebSockets for live collaboration and streaming results
  • Contribute to geometry processing and mesh handling code when needed, you don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable getting your hands dirty
  • Write tests, set up CI/CD pipelines, and keep the codebase clean and deployable

What We're Looking For

Must-haves:

  • Strong proficiency in React and modern frontend development (Hooks, state management, component architecture)
  • Experience with Python on the backend (FastAPI, Flask, or Django)
  • Comfortable with cloud infrastructure (AWS EC2, S3, Lambda, or similar)
  • Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and query optimization
  • Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design

Strong pluses:

  • Experience with Three.js or other 3D graphics libraries (WebGL, Babylon.js)
  • Familiarity with computational geometry concepts (i.e meshes, surfaces, CAD file formats)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Knowledge of WebSockets and real-time data architectures
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, AWS CDK)
  • Background in or curiosity about engineering, physics, or simulation
  • Contributions to open-source projects

Why Open Orion

  • Real impact. Engineering simulation software is a bottleneck for innovation. We're removing it.
  • Full-stack ownership. You'll work across the entire product, not own one button.
  • Open source. We build in the open and contribute back to the community.
  • Small team. Your code ships fast and your opinions shape the product.
  • San Francisco. Based in SF at the center of the engineering and AI ecosystem.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary with equity options
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
