Position Overview

NurseAmerica is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Surgical First Assistant (SFA) to provide direct support to surgeons during operative procedures. This role is critical in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes. The ideal candidate will assist in all phases of surgical care, including preoperative preparation, intraoperative assistance, and postoperative support.

Key Responsibilities

Preoperative:

  • Review patient history, surgical plans, and relevant documentation
  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field
  • Assist in positioning and prepping the patient
  • Ensure all surgical instruments and supplies are available and sterile
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to plan the procedure

Intraoperative:

  • Assist the surgeon with exposure, retraction, and visualization of the operative site
  • Control bleeding through clamping, ligating, and cauterization
  • Handle tissues, assist with suturing, and perform wound closure
  • Operate suction, irrigation, and other surgical instruments
  • Support minimally invasive and robotic procedures when applicable
  • Maintain awareness of patient condition and support surgical flow

Postoperative:

  • Apply dressings and assist in patient transfer to recovery
  • Ensure accurate instrument and sponge counts
  • Document procedures and intraoperative observations
  • Assist with postoperative care and wound management

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical First Assistant program

Licensure/Certification (one required):

  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA)
  • Physician Assistant (NCCPA certified)
  • Nurse Practitioner (board-certified with surgical/first assist training)

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a surgical setting
  • Scrub experience preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and aseptic techniques
  • Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making ability
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases
  • Prolonged standing and use of surgical attire required
  • On-call availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required
