As a Chemistry technician, you will work with molten fluoride salts and contribute to the safe, efficient, and innovative development of next-generation molten salt systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform chemical analysis of molten and quenched salt samples using techniques such as ICP-MS, IGF, spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods.
- Collect, prepare, and handle high-temperature molten salt samples under chemical safety protocols.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory instrumentation, gloveboxes, and analytical equipment used for research, including routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of lab equipment.
- Support material compatibility and corrosion testing on alloys and components exposed to molten salts.
- Record, analyze, and report experimental data with high accuracy, maintaining detailed laboratory notebooks and digital databases compliant with nuclear quality assurance standards.
- Assist in the development and execution of experimental procedures for routine handling, salt purification, fission product removal, and waste form characterization.
- Maintain strict adherence to all chemical hygiene, radiation protection (ALARA), and environmental regulations (NRC, DOE, OSHA).
- Collaborate with engineers and chemists to ensure safe and efficient facility operations.
Requirements & Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (preferred). Equivalent military or nuclear industry experience will be considered.
- 2+ years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in radiochemistry, high-temperature chemistry, or molten salts.
- Familiarity with inert atmosphere glovebox operations and high-temperature systems is desirable.
- Knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques (ICP-MS, IGF, GC-MS, Raman, FTIR, etc) is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of safety, hazardous material handling, and PPE usage in controlled environments.
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
