Position Summary
The Vice President, Strategy, Talent & Operations is a critical role that will lead NAFCC's internal operations for a remote-first, values-based organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position serves as the senior operations leader, providing strategic and day-to-day oversight of finance, human resources, technology, operations, and knowledge management. This role will drive organizational culture initiatives and ensure that NAFCC has the infrastructure, people practices, and systems required to deliver on its mission. Success in this role means building the systems, processes, and organizational capacity that allow NAFCC to scale its impact, strengthen its remote-first culture, and enable staff and leadership to operate at their highest potential.
The Vice President will manage a team of two direct reports, Manager, Technology Systems and Manager, Team Operations, oversee all outsourced vendors, and will be an active member of NAFCC's senior leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Strategy
- Partner with the Executive Director to lead the organizational planning process, including multi-year strategic plans, annual goal setting, and annual budgeting.
- Lead NAFCC's operational strategy and project management practices to ensure strategic initiatives are delivered on time and across teams.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures for hiring all vendors and external consultants
- Act as a thought partner to team leaders and provide operational oversight for cross-organizational initiatives (e.g., annual conferences, IT system updates).
- Negotiate and manage the outsourcing strategy, contracts, and vendor relationships for finance, information technology, human resources, and facilities management to ensure quality, value, and accountability.
Finance & Risk Management
- Oversee financial management functions, including budgeting, workforce planning, reporting, and audit readiness, cash flow, and organizational reserves.
- Partner with outsourced financial partners to create, monitor, and share financial reports
- Support the fundraising team, Executive Director, and board of directors with budget and reporting needs (e.g., grant reports, bi-monthly financial reports).
- Oversee enterprise risk management, insurance, legal compliance, business continuity, and organizational policies.
Organizational Culture & Talent Management
- Lead and execute staff engagements, including the annual staff retreat and recurring meetings for the leadership team and staff
- Establish systems for ongoing, consistent feedback among staff, peers, and managers, and lead the annual performance management process.
- Administer the annual organizational health survey and develop and lead initiatives to support staff culture for a remote organization (e.g. Refresh organizational values).
- Develop partnerships and processes to recruit external talent and create equitable and efficient hiring processes
Human Resources Operations
- Review the organization's benefits strategy annually to ensure alignment with best practices, and ensure staff understand and maximize their benefits.
- Lead the annual salary review process to ensure equitable staff recognition, engaging outside vendors for market research as needed.
- Annually review and update the employee handbook to ensure compliance with employment law and alignment with the organization's equity goals.
Technology & Information Systems
- Set direction for technology investments, ensuring tools are cost-effective, scalable, and aligned with organizational needs.
- Manage the outsourced IT team and oversee organizational technology infrastructure, data systems, and software platforms to support staff productivity and data security.
- Oversee NAFCC's technology innovation, including AI strategy and adoption, and manage related vendor relationships.
Knowledge Management
- Develop and maintain systems for capturing, organizing, and sharing institutional knowledge across the organization.
- Establish documentation standards and practices to reduce reliance on any single individual for critical organizational knowledge.
- Ensure smooth knowledge transfer during staff transitions and organizational change.
Qualifications
- Commitment to NAFCC's mission of supporting family child care educators and the communities they serve.
- Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5-10 years of experience leading an Operations and/or Finance function in a remote-first or distributed organization; nonprofit experience preferred.
