The Museum of the American Indian is seeking enthusiastic, reliable, and culturally aware individuals to join our team as Docents / Gallery Attendants. These roles are ideal for someone passionate about education, community engagement, and supporting cultural institutions. The position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality visitor experiences and supporting museum programming throughout the year. We are looking to hire TWO (2) positions through this posting.

Description

Key Responsibilities

Deliver engaging and informative museum programming for diverse audiences, including:

  • Onsite and outreach field trips
  • Group tours
  • Summer camps
  • Workshops
  • Special event demonstrations


Provide excellent visitor and member hospitality, including greeting guests, answering questions, and supporting educational and public events.


Maintain gallery appearance, safety, and presentation standards.


Support museum operations including light assistance in the archives, library, or gift shop.


Collaborate with staff to ensure smooth execution of programs and exhibits.


Provide weekday and/or weekend coverage as needed to support museum hours and activities.


Qualifications

  • Proven experience in operations, event management, or a related field—ideally within a museum, park, nature center, camp, or cultural organization.
  • Comfortable leading tours and delivering educational content to a variety of audiences (children, adults, families, scholars, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive, solutions-oriented attitude.
  • Familiarity with gallery, exhibit, library, or retail/gift shop environments.
  • The ability to lift and/or move 25 lbs with or without assistance. 
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain in a park setting. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in museum operations, cultural programming, or educational engagement.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or knowledge of cultural protocols is a plus.
  • Bilingual/multilingual abilities encouraged.


Hours/Compensation Breakdown

This is a seasonal, part-time position that is partially grant funded:

  • Trade Feast Season (Through October '25): 9 hours/week (part-time/on-call)
  • Fall–Spring Museum Programming (October '25 –June '26): 9 hours/week

Additional, grant-funded hours:

  • Aay-Ko Playgroup Intern (June '25 –May '26): 5 hours/week


Total Annual Compensation (Per Position): Not to exceed $16,044


This role is hourly and non-exempt, and therefore eligible for overtime pay. 

Generally, this role is not to exceed 9 hours per week without written approval by management.

We will make our best offer, and it will be the same regardless of the candidate. The hourly starting compensation for this role is $21.00/hr.
