About the Role: As a key player in our firm, you will have the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging cases, receive leadership coaching and development, and grow within your position or apply to be promoted as the firm expands.
Responsibilities:
- Case Management: Organize and maintain electronic case files, ensuring all relevant documents, pleadings, and correspondence are properly filed and accessible.
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research on criminal and family law issues, including statutes, case law, and regulations, to provide attorneys with the necessary information for case preparation.
- Document Drafting: Prepare and draft legal documents such as initiating documents, hearing statements, settlement documents, motions, affidavits, and financial statements in accordance with legal procedures and requirements.
- Client Communication: Maintain regular communication with clients to provide updates on case status, gather necessary information, and address any concerns or questions they may have.
- Court Filings: Handle the electronic filing (e-filing) of documents through the court's system, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal rules and deadlines.
- Discovery: Complete disclosure and discovery for cases in accordance with rules. Organize and summarize relevant documents.
- Legal Support at Hearings: Attend court hearings, mediations, and other legal proceedings to provide support to attorneys, take notes, and assist with any necessary document management.
- Financial Documentation: Work with financial documents such as tax returns, income statements, and asset disclosures to assist in the determination of financial issues in family law cases.
- Client Intake: Assist in the initial client intake process, gathering relevant information and helping clients complete necessary forms and documentation.
- Collaboration with Attorneys: Collaborate with attorneys on case strategy, providing insights and recommendations based on research and case analysis.
- Deadline Management: Ensure that all deadlines are met, including court filing deadlines, discovery deadlines, and other critical dates related to the case.
- Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of client information and case details in accordance with ethical and legal standards.
- Administrative work: Distributing documents and correspondence to clients, reviewing documents and minute entries for deadlines, and appropriately calendaring deadlines.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate
- Proficiency in cloud-based file management systems such as MyCase, e-filing, and ECF preferred, but we are willing to train.
- Comfort with state, local, and federal rules governing pleadings in family law matters. We are willing to train the right candidate with procedures in filing pleadings in criminal matters.
- Comfort with drafting various legal documents and pleadings, with an emphasis on family law cases.
- Ability to draft simple motions, including but not limited to motions to continue, motions to substitute counsel, and notices of appearances.
- Advanced motion practice experience is a plus and will be compensated accordingly within the advertised pay range.
- Spanish fluency is preferred.
